*UPDATE 2: AMD RX VEGA Spotted in TechPowerUp GPU Database (Supposed to launch April 28)

It's been hiding in plain sight!

Reading from an article in KitGuru it seems that RX Vega has ended up in TechPowerUp's GPU Database -

Quote

It seems it may be closer than you’d think. According to the database, the card has a release date of today (28th April 2017).

This is the link to RX Vega on the database

Looking at relative performance, it looks like it is just slightly under the GTX 1080 which, IMO, is sad. But the thing is, AMD's high end cards especially the ones with HBM have been performing better in higher resolutions than 1080p, so this could be a mixed relative performance chart. No one should even get current high end cards just for 1080p anyway. However, FPP is under the GTX 1080 as it is as per the database just 9.83 GFLOPS.

In the event that it doesn't perform up to par with at least the GTX 1080, it should all come down to price as we might see a classic R9 290/290X battle here. Cheers to hoping AMD still implements its FineWine™ Technology.

Not sure if this is a late entry to April Fools by TechPowerUp but who knows.

UPDATE:

So while I was out of house apparently, some folks here pointed out a disclaimer that can be found currently in TechPowerUp's GPU Database page for RX Vega. However here is one of the older versions which doesn't have the disclaimer

Quote

This graphics card is not released yet.

Data on this page may change in the future.

Here's a cached version without the disclaimer. (EDIT: Cached page no longer seems to show the original one. If you can, look for the earlier versions)

Wording difference -

Spoiler

Original: "The Radeon RX Vega is a graphics card by AMD, launched in April 2017."

Updated: "The Radeon RX Vega is a graphics card by AMD that is not released yet."

What does this mean? -

(a) Potential screw up on their part (could have been a joke gone bad)

or

(b) It was actually legit but since it wasn't released and was adding controversy they added the disclaimer

I think that the clocks are slow and since RX VEGA hasn't been finalized yet, the clocks could have been changed to ~1500MHz or above.

The relative performance shown there was actually based on calculation that could have been computed with the theoretical output.

La Especulación:

Not sure about this but when Linus made a video that had VEGA running Star Wars Battlefront it was hitting 60FPS+ and did not have a radiator as a liquid cooling solution. This was performing almost at par with a GTX 1080.

The delay of the release of VEGA could have been due to the fact they wanted it to perform better by bumping up the clock speeds from the reported 1200MHz in TPU's database to ~1500MHz (rumor), this would require some legit cooling and would mean this card could probably compete with something higher than a GTX 1080.

Here's a video of Linus with an engineering sample of RX VEGA - notice, no radiator.

Spoiler

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Meaning it could launch just before Prey (May 5). But without widespread rumors about it I'm more likely to believe it launches alongside Quake Champions instead.

Rx Vega will be launching soon.

Nvidia volta will launch sometime in the future.

Intel and amd are making new cpus.

There, now it's not a rumor.

Oh but wait for

1) Drivers

2) Not those drivers, later ones

3) Game patches

4) No not those games, good ones people totally play outside of testing like AOTS

Then it will totally not lose laughably to a 1080ti, in fact it might even match it's performance....by the time the 2080 Volta is out that is....yeah!

So if this is the RX VEGA (despite it's exactly what i'm looking for and exactly what i expected it to be at performance-wise) it'll all have to come down to price.

I gotta say, this will disappoint a few people but it basically competes with the 1080; a cut-down version sold for less can compete with the 1070.
Volta's coming quickly though considering Pascal's been relatively unchallenged in the high-end market for over a year.

I'm expecting it to retail around $400-$450, considering the current price of the 1080 ($480-$500); AMD will have to undercut Nvidia by a bit in order to justify it's relative performance (slightly less than the 1080) and launch time (1 year after the 1080's launch)

The fact that they call the architecture Greenland, shows that this is a VERY old spec sheet. Nothing about performance or clock rate is accurate here.

Let's say this is Vega's performance, in that case it is a HUGE disappointment. 1080 performance a year later on a bigger chip, and expensive memory. This would just be a massive flop.

All that being said this isn't vega. So irrelevant.

I think it would be OK if the smaller Vega card was around this performance in DX11, with the larger Vega was greater than the 1080 in DX 11, and closer to 1080 Ti performance. AMD still has a DX 12 and Vulkan advantage, and presumably will also have a price-to-performance advantage.

What if it's only as fast as a 1080 but costs $5? :P. Not that it will, but cost is a big factor just not the biggest.

not impossible but hard to believe the clockspeeds would be that low. Would expect them to be similar to Polaris at least. Since It's a newer design with less power/heat constraints and higher performance targets on the same 14nm process.

if it is true i wish they had provided 4k performance instead, or at least 1440p. Cause 1080p isn't relevant in this segment.

the other possibility is that those performance numbers were taken on early silicon hence the low clockspeeds. The ipc actually looks good. If you scale that up to Rx 580 clockspeeds then it will be near 1080ti even at 1080p resolution.

on the other hand if these are the final clockspeeds and 1080p performance it looks really bad for AMD. And would explain why AMD has not talked about performance... They will probably do better at the intended resolution but still...

following AMD's history on opening their fucking mouths, when AMD can't stop talking about something, the product is not as they paint it to be

look at Ryzen 5, it's actually more compelling that R7 - not all of them, but still

so, based on their history, Vega should be really good - and would also explain why nVidia scrambled to launch all their remaining Pascal cards in such short succession

but then again .. this is AMD we're talking about 9_9

LOL

It's clear they are very proud of Vega as an engineering accomplishment, it's very innovative, it breaks new ground, it's very feature-rich.

What they have avoided is raw performance. No slides comparing it to Nvidia GPUs in popular games or benchmarks etc. That may be a bad sign.
