cable mod + thermaltake = divide by zero ?

So I have been out of the PC world for over 10 years and want desperately to get back into it. I have a build planed out, all black and orange, the problem is; the PSU (Thermaltake Toughpower DPS G RGB 850W) that I want does not seem to be supported by Cable Mod, probably because Thermaltake makes cable extensions of there own. I don't see why a Cable Mod 24pin cable would be any different from the Thermaltake one. can any one tell me why there are so many Cable Mod cables for each different PSU and if there would be a problem using a the Cable Mod cables below with the PSU I have picked out, id hate to buy the cables and waste the money. Thanks in advance!

Every PSU brand and sometimes also model has a different pinout and differently shaped connectors.

You cannot use incorrect cables for a power supply because it will not fit, and if does then you will fry every component in your PC.

realistically they all use the same connectors with the same power delivery and if your worried look up schematic and test with a meter they often just use different connectors to force you into using select cables but i'm pretty sure (most of them) use the same pin layout each sending the same power.

First PC Build

CPU: i5 4690k  (4.7Ghz 1.36v)                                        MOBO: MSI z97 gaming 5

GPU: MSI GTX 1070 gaming x                  Case: NZXT s340 elite Black/Red

Storage: 1tb seagate SSHD, 240gb PNY ssd                    PSU: Corsair RM750X

Cooling:H100i V2 / Bequiet Fans

16GB Hyper X Fury Memory

Benched on CPUZ (Single-thread=2140) (Multi-Thread=8316)

Fire Strike 1.1=13660

Time Spy=5519

Cinebench R15 (CPU= 509cb) (OpenGL=118.28 FPS)

Unigine (Superposition 4k optimized=5581) (Heaven Extreme=120.6 FPS Score:3038) (Valley Extreme HD= 92.7 FPS Score:3879)

Nope.

On the PSU end pretty much every brand uses different connectors.

For example, corsair power supplies with the 24 pin connector split in half:

Or cooler master PSUs with non-molex connects, and 5x1 pin connectors:

im just saying that not in the extreme case they are usually similar in the fact that it is only a little different EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G3, 220-G3-0850-X1, 80+ GOLD, 850W Fully Modular, EVGA ECO Mode with New HDB Fan, Includes FREE Power On Self Tester, Compact 150mm Size, Power Supply

Corsair rm650x =

CORSAIR RMx Series RM650X 650W 80 PLUS GOLD Haswell Ready Full Modular ATX12V & EPS12V SLI and Crossfire Ready Power Supply

these psu's use the female connectors if it almost came off the mobo but changed a small amount very few  PSUs have extreme connectors like the cooler master one you showed that is rare and is also a enthusiast product put if you plugged a wire into each hole and put in its corresponding female on the mobo it would power it just fine.

  • 1 year later...

Just confirmed your question is very well warranted. I just built my new rig and have the exact power supply and bought the cable mod pro from cable mod and all other cables are fine but the 24 pin tax cord will not allow my computer to get power I noticed one plug different from the stock and it makes a world of difference. I will post pictures as well. If there is a way to fix this or to tag cable mod it would be greatly appreciated as I’d like to get this fixed ASAP. The one cord that I want to look good doesn’t :(
