That said, if I throw enough money at you you'll swear by its ability.

I would until bread loaves cost 100 USD.

I need to rent a U-Haul and move some furniture. I plan on picking up two young men from the local Home Depot and paying them to do the physical labor. I was thinking 2 men, $10/hr each, and I'll get some pizza hut or something for lunch (for all of us). Any tips or advice? I've never done this before.

Temporary Workers would be covered under liability but they are usually double the min wage. So $10/hour is min, they charge $20-$22.

If you are talking hiring people right off the street, you could be held liable if anything goes wrong.

Most of those guys are drunks anyways so, they aint the brightest pea in the pod if you know what I mean.

They would rather pick bottles and pan handle then sue someone.

I seriously try to tell some, and they just dont understand. Around here tho $15/hour is the unofficial min wage. In other places where rent can be very high, Tim Hortons workers get paid $20+/hour. That is because rental rates are thousands of dollars, A room anywhere else is $500, but $1000+ is not uncommon.

If you have an incorperated company you could be covered and they would only be able to sue your company. But they'd need to sign papers. Day laborers off the street probably cant read, nor sign their signature.

Wow there are actual Mexicans waiting out the front of home depots? I always thought that was an over exaggerated stereotype.

I'm pretty sure the OP is talking about hiring ACTUAL Home Depot employees, on their day off... the only one talking about actual immigrants is yathis.

You live in canada, where your $ is worth significantly less as well mate.

$10-15/hr at most is typical for basic menial manual labor here in the US. Asking for more than that would entail them typically being professional movers of some kind, and a couple teens out at home depot certainly are not.

Just say it

"They are illegals so they should be glad they are getting paid anything instead of being deported"

I'd personally give at least 20$/h to each of them to get a good job done.

10$ isn't even minimum wage and I would not want to hire people for that amount to carry and go through my prized things because 10$ job would get you a 10$ "i don't care really about any of this" service.

$20/hr for labor is crazy high. I work full time at a call center and I make less than that. @Atmos is correct, that's too damn high! @WindirBear recommended a flat rate which is actually what I did. I picked up two guys at the U-Hall location for $50/each, and the job ended up taking 4.5 hours, so not terribly more than I was hoping to spend. They did an excellent job, no damage or issues, and I tipped them with a Heineken each. @ArduinoBen and some others seemed to like the pizza idea but I decided the beer would be a better choice. They certainly agreed...

sounds like a reasonable plan. as a labourer, I think guys would be more happy with a higher wage than a free pizza lunch. Also, if you're doing pizza make sure its during the shift or that its portable if its after shift. guys may value their time more than sitting down after a day of work with some dude to have pizza.

I ended up tipping them with beer. Sort of like Pizza. But liquid.

Yeah this is a good idea. If you know any teenagers, they'll be excited to do work for less money than an employed man. Try family friends and stuff first.

I don't have any family here in Washington, and my friends are pretty useless as laborers. Thanks though!

Honestly, if you don't know anyone personally that you can trust, I would just hire a moving company. Yeah it'll cost a bit more, but they'll provide their own truck, and they'll be professionals who know what they are doing.

Hiring some people from HD might not end up great, because the amount you're paying them per hour, for the heavy amount of physical labour, will basically just make them not give a shit about being especially careful or quick. You could get lucky of course and get the two best behaved, best working individuals who want to work hard for very little pay. Or you could get the two jackasses who don't give a shit if they scrape your antique cabinet and scratch the finish.

I ended up picking up two guys at the U-Hall location for $50 each, and they did an excellent job. Sure, it could have ended badly, but it didn't! For a one time thing, I'm happy with the results. All in it cost me $160, much cheaper than any professional place.

These guys did have an interest in doing a good job, because I had a 3rd party in need of similar services and he wanted me to recommend him...

Mmm, I hate to sound so cold here but these men were, not of the legal variety, so I don't see liability as a concern. Of coarse if someone were hurt I would help them, but money wise, it's a risk that comes with their trade. If they tried to the legal help, they'd likely be gone before it could help them.

And just to be clear, my lack of caring is not because they're illegal immigrants; I'm just an ass who doesn't care about the harm I may cause to anyone I'm not personally attached to, and it's a lucky happenstance that these men would have no method to defend themselves legally. I'd still offer assistance to some degree, but if they wanted cash for their injury, or hush money, not happening.

Now, I drove the truck. They wanted to have 3 men work for me, and one would drive but I said no to that. If they ran someone over or got in an accident then I would not be so lucky in avoiding the consequences. I suppose in that regard I am lucky that nothing went wrong, but like I said for a once time event I'll take my chances, and that gamble ended up paying off. I saved hundreds over a professional moving company. But I understand your point, and looking back now it was a risk.

I don't have that kind of time to work with, unfortunately.

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

Then them illegals would just hunt you down and your family and fuck you and your family up. That is the Mexican way.

Be sure to anonymousize your license plate ;) but then they could pull the registry records if its a property.
