I'm going to hire some day laborers, any tips?

I need to rent a U-Haul and move some furniture. I plan on picking up two young men from the local Home Depot and paying them to do the physical labor. I was thinking 2 men, $10/hr each, and I'll get some pizza hut or something for lunch (for all of us). Any tips or advice? I've never done this before.

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special. -_-

I don't know if my advice is "good", as I too have no experience, but if you're planning on having them for less than 3 hours, just give 40 or 50 bucks each, and fuck the pizza.

Oh no, we will be working for 4-5 hours at least. Moving furniture from one house to 3 other houses. I think the pizza makes for a little bonus. Pay per hour, plus a casual lunch we can enjoy while working.

Oh I did, but my friends knowledge is limited compared to the internet! None of them have done this before.

Hmm, my local Pizza Hut is awesome. Orders are always on time, almost always accurate, and they more than make up for their mistakes. One time they forgot my parmesan crust, and they gave me a $20 credit. The entire pizza was only $11 but they credited me $20. I guess it's different all across the country, but my store is great.

To be honest, if you do not know these persons, don't get them pizza. They may have other plans with their gf/wives. 

 

I'd personally give at least 20$/h to each of them to get a good job done. 

 

10$ isn't even minimum wage and I would not want to hire people for that amount to carry and go through my prized things because 10$ job would get you a 10$ "i don't care really about any of this" service.

10$ is minimum wage here in the US. 20$ an hour would be a freaking excellent job for something as menial as manual labor.

yes, but If you were to pay me to 10$ an hour to sweat my ass of moving things around or just idle not doing much at home depot. I'd choose the latter. 

 

If you go through ads in the papers, they charge 25$ an hour on average at my place. 

 

It used to be menial but nowadays, I believe it's all about effort. you could go work to mcdonalds and just be cashier and go back home after 5 hours feeling barely exhausted or go move things and be dead tired but only still have 50$ because you ain't used to do this kind of workload. 

 

This is how I see it.

sounds like a reasonable plan. as a labourer, I think guys would be more happy with a higher wage than a free pizza lunch. Also, if you're doing pizza make sure its during the shift or that its portable if its after shift. guys may value their time more than sitting down after a day of work with some dude to have pizza.

This is how I see it. 

You live in canada, where your $ is worth significantly less as well mate.

$10-15/hr at most is typical for basic menial manual labor here in the US. Asking for more than that would entail them typically being professional movers of some kind, and a couple teens out at home depot certainly are not.

So i have no experience picking up men, but as a man who would like from time to time to be picked up i can say you need not offer me any money whatsoever. OK OK, i know, my sense of humor sucks. whatever.

**Use older kids from the neighborhood unless you know some out of work men specifically as most guys at HD are busy and do not want your 1day job in my area at least

Yeah this is a good idea. If you know any teenagers, they'll be excited to do work for less money than an employed man. Try family friends and stuff first.

Honestly, if you don't know anyone personally that you can trust, I would just hire a moving company. Yeah it'll cost a bit more, but they'll provide their own truck, and they'll be professionals who know what they are doing.

 

Hiring some people from HD might not end up great, because the amount you're paying them per hour, for the heavy amount of physical labour, will basically just make them not give a shit about being especially careful or quick. You could get lucky of course and get the two best behaved, best working individuals who want to work hard for very little pay. Or you could get the two jackasses who don't give a shit if they scrape your antique cabinet and scratch the finish.

I was speaking more toward the quality of the product offered and not the actual customer service.  I see you live in Washington so i will forgive you for not knowing the difference between good pizza and pizza hut.

$7.25 is minimum wage, at least on the federal level.  

 

Also since the OP isn't deducting taxes, social security, or medicare from that amount that $10 wage comes out to be pretty solid even against a $12 employed wage.

It doesn't scale like that. Seattle is $15 but small houses are also 1.2mil. If you raise the pay everything else goes up. You need to find a happy median
