Nintendo announces the new *New* Nintendo 2DS XL game console (not a joke)

I cant even stand to see content in "3D" on my 3DS XL 1st generation, it simply hurts my eyesight when trying to see a blurry mess that isnt even properly distinguishable, minimum or maximum level of the slider.

The New 3DS XL has a much better implementation of 3D. The two front-facing cameras track your eyes even in darkness (thanks to IR) so that the two panes are always in sync with you.

Then they could charge a bit more for a fair profit margin.  Within reason of course. Not too high.

Then it wouldn't really be a good deal anymore to most people. People have this preconceived notion that the value of software should decrease over time. $60 for 30 games is $2 a game, which is cheaper than the game's individual price on the VC. If you were to bump it up to say $100, now you're edging close to $3.33 per game and some of those games you may not care about, so the value gets even worse.

That would be when to stop making it not before when people still want it.

I don't know.

Either way, just because you have something popular, doesn't mean you should keep selling it. There was a show about travel and food I watched and the host talked about how a chef axed his most popular dish because the chef would end up in a business he didn't like.

Fire Emblem had had 4 games released and Pokemon about 5. There's also Monster Hunter which is quite good with 3D among others franchises like Cooking Mama (I'm kidding!) and Xenoblade.

Personally not a fan, at all, of the Monster Hunter series. Sure it may have been where Dark Souls got many of its ideas and where other games did too, but it doesnt suit my style of gameplay and it is quite boring, in my opinion. On the 3DS especially, with the tricky controls and ehm, less than stellar viewing thanks to the bad graphics.

Currently doesn't have nearly as many games, is made for a whole different type of games, has worse battery life, and only has one screen. If anyone can make them exist together pretty well it'll be Nintendo

It looks like I'll be upgrading my black and blue wedge for a black and turquoise slab after it has been released since I'll unlikely be able to find all the cash needed, but hay, at least I'll be able to exit pokemon moon and not get that please wait notification as it reboots the system.

I didn't find Monster Hunter's controls to be terrible on the 3DS. Metal Gear Solid 3D, on the other hand, was quite painful on 3DS controls. Shooting the Yoshis during the motorcycle segments were absolutely Demonic, and more a test of memory and timing than reflex.

Sorry.  I should've mentioned the items I get at Walmart are food.  Like frozen pizza for example.

Please wait notification?    Does the 2DS (I assume that's what you mean by slab) have a problem running Pokemon Moon?

Cool, I always thought they should have done this. I hated the original design of the 2DS, looked horrible. Like a cheap kids toy that you throw in a plastic box when you're bored of it only to find it years down the line covered in dust. This looks more like a console I would want (as a kid and even now as an adult).

GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XT

RAM: 32GB 3600MHz

Nintendo says that they will support the 3DS until 2018

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2017/04/28/nintendo-will-continue-to-support-3ds-in-2018

So, it looks like Nintendo has more games coming for the system in 2017 and 2018, but it should be the end of it soon after.

I guess devs just finishes what is in the works, and many changed to focus on the Nintendo Switch. That is my guess.

I'm curious to know if Nintendo will have a replacement for the 3DS/2DS at all.  It's tempting to imagine the company going all-in on the Switch after this, but I don't think that'd be wise: not everyone has $300 to spend on a tablet, and not every parent wants their kids carrying around a 6-inch slab of glass with removable controllers.

My guess is that Nintendo will still want a low-cost handheld, but that it'll purposefully aim for lower prices ($150 or less) to create an obvious gap.  You won't see a 'high-end' $200 handheld unless the Switch itself drops in price.

The philosophy with the Nintendo Switch was to combine both the handheld and console sections of the company (They built a new building for that purpose) and I fully expect that to be the case moving forward with Nintendo focusing most of their attention on the Switch as the only platform for their AAA releases, but you want to know what the 3DS/2DS successor is? The answer is simple: Mobile

Nintendo are making a big push into mobile gaming and I believe that will lead to some very good games releasing that will be perfect the very young demographic, the perfect way to get them into Nintendo games so they make their way to the more complex and interesting stuff on the main console.

I have the 2DS. It's nice for the Pokemon Hoenn RSE remakes, but that's all I really bought it for.

They're keeping the 2DS around since it's a good, cheap product for parents to get for their kids. My son, for example is 6, and he loves his 3DS.

It's reliable, cheap and has a line-up of games that are readily available.

The trouble with mobile is that gaming on mobile is shit. The controls, or rather lack of, really limit mobile gaming. The games on mobile are sold at a much lower price point, with Apple/Google taking a sizeable cut, and with many people, especially the young, unwilling to pay for mobile games at all. Plus Nintendo don't control the hardware, which is something they are very fond of.

I think Nintendo will go one of two ways;

Either a shrunken, Sony Vita like, Switch. This would reduce dev costs for games, but it would need better battery life, and a lower price point than it's bigger brother.

Or they could do a new 3DS/DS compatible console, a 3DS Advance perhaps? More power and higher res screens over the 3DS, but not so much of a performance increase as to ruin battery life or push the price too close to the switch. And hopefully backwards compatible with 3DS and DS games, so it would launch with a huge library already. But this would leave them still with two incompatible eco-systems which they have indicated they want to get away from.

Then again this is Nintendo, they could do anything. Their own phone? A limited run of 'Classic Gameboys'? A Virtual boy VR headset for the switch? A range of Nintendo branded cats?

The only thing I see Nintendo doing is a switch dev 2, if they go VR. Basically, do like fge *New* Nintendo 3DS XL style. Meaning, same device, same size, but the screen will larger and 1080p (boarders will be reduced, basically), and has Pascal Tegra. Which will be setup to boost performance to compensate the higher resolution screen. With 1080p you can do VR OK. You can use 720p but you'll see too easily the pixel grid of the LCD, and see too much aliasing. Which is a big problem especially that already Nintendo has trouble with putting AA for some reason. They keep assuming you need max sharpness because CRT TVs softens the image. They forget that LCD is sharp.

Well no..else it would not be called 3DS :)

The 3DS was a very interesting idea. But the novelty wears off, and many people have trouble enjoying it after a period of time. But regardless, it did offer more performance over the DS series, and improved controlled for 3D games, even more so the "New" series model with the C-Stick. Would have been better if it was a another stick, but they wanted to keep the form factor.

I wish companies would stop being idiotic and drop "New" from product names, and then go with something like "v1, v2, v3, etc..", so instead of the new nintendo 2ds xl, the nintendo 2ds xl v2.
