iPhone 8 may miss one key feature already in the Galaxy S8 -- Gigabit LTE

  1. 1. Does your wireless carrier has started rolling out gigabit LTE?

  2. 2. What is the fastest 4G LTE speed you've seen in your own phone or tablet?

    • <10 mbps (indicate below)
    • 11-20 mbps
    • 21-30 mbps
    • 31-40 mbps
    • 41-50 mbps
    • >50 mbps (indicate below, better with a screenshot from Speedtest)

This is a rumor that's mostly likely to be true in my opinion.

Gigabit LTE will be a signature feature on many high-profile, premium phones this year. Yet Apple's next iPhone, which is still months away from becoming an official product, may not be one of them. Apple designs its own processor and uses modems from Qualcomm and Intel. But Intel's latest commercial-ready modem won't hit Gigabit LTE speeds, which could force Apple to slow down the Qualcomm version to ensure all iPhones are on the same footing.

If Apple opts to skip out on Gigabit LTE, the iPhone 8 will hit the market with a key disadvantage when the company is trying to position the 10th iteration of its iPhone franchise as the most advanced phone yet. The Galaxy S8 is just the first premium phone to tap into the technology. Qualcomm expects up to 10 Android phones this year to follow suit.

"This is not an area where Apple should want to cede competitive ground to Google and Samsung," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at research firm GlobalData.

While consumers would normally ignore something as wonky as Gigabit LTE, carriers are starting to trumpet the technology as a catalyst for their faster networks. T-Mobile CEO John Legere boasted in January that his company would be the first with Gigabit LTE this year, providing a public spotlight to what could have been an obscure technical term.

What would the next iPhone presumably miss out on? Gigabit LTE promises a significant speed boost to your phone -- think 18 times faster than the average speeds posted by the likes of T-Mobile and Verizon in a recent test by OpenSignal. With those kinds of speeds, you can say goodbye to buffering as downloads zip by in a flash.

Carriers, meanwhile, also want more phones on Gigabit LTE because it makes for a more efficient network better able to handle more users and traffic.

Apple, Qualcomm and Intel declined to comment.

Repeating history?

Why is this scenario plausible? This has already happened before, according to a legal filing from Qualcomm.

Let's rewind things back to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. It marked the first time Apple used two modem suppliers on the device, with Intel modems going into T-Mobile and AT&T iPhones, and Qualcomm modems going into Verizon and Sprint versions.

Qualcomm accused Apple of limiting the Qualcomm modems in iPhones so the performance would be on par with the Intel-powered version.

Qualcomm accused Apple of slowing down its modem in the iPhone to keep pace with the Intel-powered version of the iPhone.

While Apple declined to comment on Qualcomm's filing, it pointed to its own lawsuit in January, in which it accuses Qualcomm of unfairly charging for royalties based on technology that it didn't help create.

Still, the charges are in line with the results that researchers at Twin Prime and Cellular Insights found, according to Bloomberg.

With the upcoming iPhone 8, Qualcomm offers the X16 modem -- the same found packed into the Snapdragon 835 that's capable of Gigabit LTE.

Intel's latest chip, the XMM 7480, has a top speed of 600 megabits per second. Its first Gigabit LTE-capable chip, the XMM 7560, hits the market next year.

This might be an issue to a few wireless carriers who have now deployed gigabit LTE but for many, it's not. My wireless carrier claims 42 mbps down but in my area, it maxes out to around 15-35 depending on congestion. The reason I'm seeing why Apple is sourcing LTE modems from two different companies is that Qualcomm can't keep up with the demand but as it turns out, AT&T/T-Mobile iPhone 7/7+ is using an Intel modem that performs not as good as the Qualcomm modem equipped Verizon/Sprint iPhone 7/7+.

So yeah, not that much of an issue for me and hopefully I'm getting the next iPhone.

I see the soul that is inside

Fix your formating before ... I fix your face?

Edit:

Gigabit is all well and good, but what are the chances that the advertised rates will be true? For me, it won't really matter since I don't really use my phone for much more than accessing hospital records off-site and teleconferencing.

Here's the fastest 4G LTE speed I've achieved by using Speedtest

IMG_5463.PNG.0422da3974f87c3cac6cf7ca04edc91a.PNG

Not too shabby I guess. Not the fastest but at least consistent and the latency doesn't go up to 100 even during congestion.

There is more that meets the eye
I see the soul that is inside

I got 75Mbps about 3 years ago on an iPhone 5s using 4g. That's about 8 times the speed of my home internet, and will empty my 500MB allowance in seconds. Just tested on my 6P and got about 12Mbps, I guess more people use it now. Back on my first test I was the only person I knew to have both a 4g phone and a 4g SIM.

Also, several ISPs in my country have already been told they can't call their "Gigabit" plans gigabit because the speed will fluctuate and won't always deliver Gigabit speeds.

Apparently it will be at least  2020 before anyone actually builds a 5G network in NZ.

No screenshot handy, but I've pulled 45-55 down on Tmobile pretty frequently.  Upload was somewhere in the 20's.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

Hit about 50 mbps in LIC,NY when they originally reframed the network in that neighborhood. Now i'm lucky if I could get any type of service on the same tower.

I would care if I thought Verizon would support Gigabit 4g anytime soon, but as of now, even in the heart of NYC I get <40mbps.

My bigger concern with the iPhone 8 is that touch ID will be on the back, or worse, completely absent (although I can't imagine Apple would just remove touchID because that would create such a mess).

Old screenshot 'cause I'm not in the city, but yep. Huge af, so spoiler. (Yes, it says I'm on wifi because it's an old result. Note the cell service by the icon; changes to wifi signal, like in the top right.)

They can say whatever they want, but I bought a 4G phone back in March 2011 and it was years before 4g was actually common/usable.

I don't think Apple is dumb enough to get rid of their Touch ID in their iPhones. Apple was the first to properly implement biometric authentication in phones thanks to their acquisition of AuthenTec back in 2012. The rumor has it that Touch ID will be moved to the back because their supply manufacturer is having trouble mass producing the Touch ID embedded to the cover glass at the front of the phone.

Did the 4G phone you bought back in 2011 supported Verizon's 700 MHz LTE band?

actually, fastest?

it would be over 50mb, but my regular speeds are around 5mbps.

what does gigabit LTE do for me? fucking nothing!

what we should do, is have better coverage in areas with poor LTE service.. i hate seeing that -117 LTE..

what -87 LTE does to me :)

138 is a good number.

Edit:

Gigabit is all well and good, but what are the chances that the advertised rates will be true? For me, it won't really matter since I don't really use my phone for much more than accessing hospital records off-site and teleconferencing.

I find Gigabit LTEt somewhat pointless unless data caps greatly expand to allow some utilization.

Third world country problems ??

This is the speed I'm getting once I step out of 4G LTE coverage (e.g rural areas) that is typically confined to cities and big towns.

If I ever got the horrible experience of using -110 3G.. I mean I'll do a speedtest at school tomorrow.

If I can find it, I had a speedtest result of 0.08mb mirrored on 2g and about your speed on 3G.

Also, that's a thing in Canada also. It's called 'wind mobile' and their H+ in suburban to rural areas.. About that speed.

I wonder if LTT employees have zippy LTE coverage inside their office? @LinusTech @Slick @nicklmg

they have gigabit in their office. :P

also, probably not. A large warehouse + 2700mhz Rogers LTE (Linus uses Rogers I think.. Well, in his S8 review..)

not fun.

No low band spectrum for Canadian wireless carriers yet? Mine just started deploying 700 MHz for improved coverage inside buildings.

iirc its 1700, 1900, 2100 and 2700mhz for rogers.

dont have 700mhz here, isn't that 2g/3g territory?
