EDIT: Elon Musk's Boring Company is moving forward, Hardware has been spotted, Underground Sledways for vehicles

Some actual hardware has been spotted for The Boring Company, a company that Elon Musk has started up to create tunnels.  An article from February 16th on Tech Crunch has some additional details on the company:

The plan right now is to take this initial hole and widen it so that it can support a tunnel boring machine, which would then dig down and then begin chewing through the earth horizontally once it hits a depth of around 50 ft. The desired end state for the tunnel is that it be wide enough to fit cars, and Musk told Bloomberg it’s intended as the anchor for a widespread underground transportation network, but he isn’t yet revealing where the tunnel’s first destination will be.

This actually seems to be pretty good news as it is showing a good deal of forward progress for his Boring Company and will more than likely be able to be in place for when his Hyperloop is ready to be implemented.  In my opinion, I think that this kind of transit system will probably be a lot more feasible for large cities and metropolitan areas than flying cars and other flying vehicles.  Of course, there will still be a lot of technical challenges for this when they begin dealing with the local geology under the cities.

 

EDIT: In an article quoting a recent TED talk, it is confirmed that Elon Musk is envisioning this company building something like a subterranean road network...

I have to admit that this actually makes quite a bit of sense if it can be implemented although Musk himself admits that he only spends about 1 to 2% of his time on this.

I remember watching a Discovery show a long time ago, where it says that these boring machines live are left underground after their work is complete. Well that's like a lot of money wasted for a 1 time use job.
