A Pentium or i3 would be a good choice if you're wanting to use Plex.

You'll be able to use ECC memory with a compatible chipset.

I'd look at some of the SoC server boards since they'll consume the least amount of power while giving exceptional performance.

so a pc like linus did in his 8 core cheap build would be enough with ecc

Link?

I wouldn't use just any board since the NAS will power things that aren't needed or beneficial for the functions meaning you'll be wasting money on electricity. I would highly recommend ECC for any type of server that will be on 24/7 or for long periods of time.

You can go with a crap computer if you just need to copy some files.  If you will be, let's say, video editing with footage off of that NAS, you will need a more powerful server, more similar to the ones Linus has made in some of his videos, but not the overkill ones.........   ;-)

I don't know if $50 is your entire budget, but I'd go with a G4560 and a C-chipset motherboard or a used LGA775 server.

Yes.  Any old computer would be fine.  Like with my hard drive array, I just need to back up all my files.  Won't even have a computer just plug it into the *Ethernet hub for my laptop.......

I can't link you to any, but they're rackmounted cases that you can just leave in the garage. They consume very little power and ECC is super-cheap.

I agree with this.  My friend has one that uses a small ARM processor and can deliver the full speed of a single HDD while using only about 12 watts peak.

Dell PowerEdge is a bit overkill if youre just looking for a basic file server, and no additional functions like Plex transcoding etc...

My old NAS in 2010 with a 9 x 2TB software raid was running on an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ with the cheapest mobo Asus had, and 4GB of memory- and it ran in Software RAID without issues. You can run a basic fileserver on a toothbrush.
