Overwatch - High cpu usage and low gpu usage.

Go to solution Solved by c0d0ps,

Update:

My new ram stick has come (another 1x8 GB same model) so now I have dual channel ram 16 GB (2x8 GB) instead of single channel ram (1x8 GB).

Overwatch still has high cpu (around 90% to 95%) usage but gpu usage is higher now and my lowest fps is around 152 to fps on lowest settings 75% render scale. Average fps is around 200 fps. I'll do more testing and then I'll answer any questions if someone had similar problems.

So far it seems like my performance is fixed. Dual channel 2133 MHz (motherboard doesn't allow higher) ram makes a noticeable difference at 144 Hz compared to 2133 MHz single channel ram. It is also worth checking your power saving settings though.

You can see my full build in my signature:
CPU - I5 6500 (locked)

GPU - 980 ti strix (default or increased power limit + increased fan speed)

Monitor - 1980x1080 144hz

For some reason my gpu usage is around 30% (unlock frames no vsync) and my cpu usage is around 100%. It was perfectly fine with both (cpu and gpu) a few days ago (don't remember the stats though). I have newest driver 381.89 and my previous driver was 381.59 (i think)

I'll give more info and/or picture if needed later.

Overwatch is on performance mode in power management settings. In game settings are 75% everything on low (I want as much fps as possible but I will occasionally use the limit fps to refresh rate option which is not vsync).

Update:
I get about 130 to 150 fps with lowest settings 75% render scale with nvidia power management on performance and single gpu display option everything else is default.

are the fps you getting playable if yes, then there is no issues, if no, then look and see if there is any background process which is drawing all the CPU power, if the answer to that is no, then it might be possible that there is a CPU bottleneck for the gpu, but I doubt it in overwatch, as pentiums are fine to run it with no problem

Try rolling back your driver and see if it improves.

Also monitor tasks for CPU usage to see if it is the game vs another process thats pinning you cpu load to 100%

It is most likely a rogue (messed up/buggy) background process that is killing your CPU.  Have you played overwatch again since?  And does the same problem occur once again.

DDU+ Run Malwarebytes, this is either drivers fault or a malware.

I have run both. Removed some "thunder malware" but no performance difference.

I tried ddu+old/new driver and no difference. (Uninstall driver+restart option).

I have tried to troubleshoot for 1.5 days. Nothing used 10% or more for any extended periods of time.

Overwatch uses 40 to 80% but I still have 100% cpu usage.

Since they sometimes drop under 100 with lowest settings they are not playable fps. Nothing uses even close to as much as overwatch.

What frame rate are you getting.  I know that OverWatch is not a VERY CPU heavy game.

Around 100 to 144 on lowest settings 75% render scale. I can test again in a few min.

When you drop 40+ fps you notice it and when you are used to 144+ stable (it's a 980ti running with lowest settings and 75% render scale) it''s a huge difference.

Bnet turns off when I launch the game. Nothing uses 10% or more for any extended periods of time. I have even tried upping the priority of Overwatch to high and it made no noticeable difference.

I've already ddu'd my drivers away several times then tried the previous and newest driver but no change :(

I've used safe mode 1-2 times but most of the time it is normal mode on ddu (uninstall and then restart option).

I guess i'll try max settings for Overwatch later. But I am worried about my 100% cpu usage. I just ran malwarebytes and I got no virus. Windows defender quick scan showed nothing, I am currently running windows defender full scan and then offline scan.

I think I had something similar to you on some games with my 280x xD

Overwatch uses most of my cpu (around 60% to 80% I think) , nothing uses 10% or more for any extended periods of time.

Maybe my math is wrong but it says 90% to 100% cpu usage and Overwatch uses most of it but not close enough to all.

Overwatch uses most of my cpu (around 60% to 80% I think) , nothing uses 10% or more for any extended periods of time.

Maybe my math is wrong but it says 90% to 100% cpu usage and Overwatch uses most of it but not close enough to all.

this is why I told you to order by CPU usage

Windows on its own should not use anywhere around 10-20% unless it's doing "something"

That's what I did. It's incredibly hard to determine what's using up my cpu without it.

I could try to screenshot it I suppose but then I need to tab out of Overwatch or I will only screenshot the game. I found out that the hard way :/
