AT&T needs some branding help, Improved 4G is NOT 5G

It would appear that someone over at AT&T needs some help understanding how to label technology products.  In a move that is guaranteed to confuse many a consumer, AT&T will be rolling out their new '5G Evolution' to 20 Metro Areas this year.  Unfortunately, this isn't a 5G network, but improvements on the existing 4G network.  According to Hot Hardware, these improvements consist of:

"Customers can expect to see their data speeds increase as we continue to invest in our wireless network by adding small cells and using advanced 5G Evolution achieved through upgrades like carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM and more," AT&T explains.

 

AT&T is leveraging technologies that are already available as part of the 4G LTE standards (LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro) to deliver faster speeds to customers than what they're already getting. And that is great, nobody should criticize AT&T for optimizing its network. But what's crummy is calling this 5G Evolution when nothing about this is related to 5G, which by the way will end up using technologies completely different from today's LTE networks.

So while it is good that they are improving their existing network, at least if you have a phone that can utilize the improvements (Samsung S8), they really should not be marketing this as 5G service in any way as it will only cause confusion when actual 5G networks are put into place.

If a mobile network attempted to pull this shit over in the UK, ofcom would jump down their throats quicker than they can say "Oops". Ofcom is quick to fine companies that mislabel their products and/or services. I wish the US was more heavy handed when it comes to stuff like this.

I was about to say...5G isn't really even out or done yet. So when I saw this I'm like...what? Did they have they're own team working on it lol? xD

Wouldn't fly in NZ.

A couple ISPs were recently told not to use the term "Gigabit" unless they could absolutely guarantee that every customer would always receive Gigabit speeds. Ultra-fast is fine, 900+Mb is fine, but Gigabit refers to a specific speed and a specific promise.

Considering LTE stands for 'Long Term Evolution', I would say yes.  This strikes me as complete marketing stuff...  They probably want to be able to boast about having 'First and Fastest 5G Network in the US' or 'Switch to AT&T and have your phone operate on the first 5G Evolution network nationwide'.  While I definitely support a company improving their existing infrastructure, I think that they need to properly label the product they are distributing.

They gave multiple warnings to split and time to make the necessary changes. BT decided it didn't want to, so ofcom intervened. They are fair and give a fair chance for the company to make amends however if warnings are gone unheeded they tend to be pretty heavy handed. Without ofcom in the UK the ISP's etc would do anything they liked.

Much the same as they did with their '4G' then. Their 4G was only HSDPA which was just higher speed 3G, which is now why people around the world use either 4G or LTE for the actual 4th gen network depending on if the operators in their country shot their load on calling something 4G when it wasn't.

Yep the Canadian Carriers were all guilty of that. Pissed me off. They all referred to HSPA+ as 4G, even in marketing and official materials.
