FreeNAS Server on the way. Do I need an HBA or Perc700 will do?

Jerped

I read on reddit some folks had problem with the Perc700 Raid card form Dell.

I bought a Dell R510 with this card and 12x300Gb SAS, And I wonder if it will be a problem with FreeNAS.

I will use FreeNAS to run a Plex server and a Windows VM for multiple game servers.

Full server spec:

Dell R510 2U

Dual Xeon X5672 3.2 GHz quad-core with hyper-Threading

32Gb RAM

12x 300GB 10K SAS HDD

Perc H700 with 512Mb cache & battery.

Otherwise what OS would you recommend? I have past experience with Windows Server 2012 R2 and have access to licenses.

It doesn't like RAID cards because ZFS likes to be able to see/have direct control over the drives.

Would it be a good idea to put the drives in raid 5 with the card, then install windows server 2016 with hyperv and make a VM for freeNAS?

FreeNAS also don't like being in a VM (for the same reason). If you want to use the RAID card, then don't use FreeNAS at all.

Do you have an alternative to FreeNAS or a good HBA to replace the Perc h700 card?

I would plug the HDDs directly in the motherboard but I don't think it has 12 sata ports xD

Where are you in the world as the used eBay market may be the best bet. There are a lot of Intel, Lenovo, IBM and HP cards that can be flashed to IT mode to run as a HBA on the cheap.

so games servers run on windows only and you also want a file server. Just use windows server. It might not have the same features as freeNAS but its not entirely useless as a fileserver either.

I live in Canada. Is it possible for me to keep the H700 and flash it like you say?

It's a mixed bag - some people find they can, others can't. See below. You can always try though you'll risk bricking it

You would want something like a PERC H200 for using ZFS, so that you can pass the disks directly to FreeNAS.

ok nice! is there a big difference between the two other than the ability to use it for ZFS?

my noob logic indicates that a lower number in the model would significate a lower end model? like lower transfer speed or something like that?

The H200 is a 6Gbps HBA, where the H700 is a 6Gbps RAID adapter.

Difference is, the H200 doesn't do RAID - which is exactly what you want for ZFS and other Software arrays like MDADM & Storage Spaces.
