Formatting and permission to saving onto external hard drive

I've run out of space on my uni macs I use for video editing. I've just bought an external hard drive as although I can start new projects I can't export on after effects as I run out of space. It won't let me save directly to the hard drive as I think the format is us "windows NT File System (NTFS) and the sharing & permissions is on read only. It implies this is the case on Adobe media encoder error pop up. I can't find any help on the internet to change the settings, I think most of the threads are on older OS's and I never really use macs anyway. TIA

Go in search 

Type Disk Utility

Select your External HDD

Reformat it using Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
