4.5k build for a coworker

PSUGuru

Hello everyone. A couple days ago, a coworker of mine approached me and asked me if I knew anything about computers--probably because I wear SODIMM RAM sticks around my neck xD. I said I absolutely did. So, he has been saving up this money for the past four years. He said he did some research--not enough of it if you ask me--but his list was all over the place. I told him I would compile a list for him.

His absolutely maximum budget is 5k, but he would preferr to stay within 4400-4700 USD. He is only gaming. No photoshop, no streaming, just gaming. He wants a rig that's absolutely and utterly overkill. He wants very minimal LEDs and no RGB. He wants a jet black look to it, with some dim white LEDs to illuminate certain areas enough to where it's eery. He also wants this thing to last a long time and be practically dead silent. So, no water cooling, and no HDDs. He says he frequently talks to his friends, so he would like a somewhat decent mic and would love very nice headphones. 4k is nice, but he wants the 144Hz on a monitor. So, 1440p will have to do. So, I'll list the requirements below:

- Intel only. He won't consider AMD. He is aware of Ryzen and upcoming Vega.

- Has to be dead silent, or as silent as possible without compromising much performance or cooling.

- He really wants SLI. He is aware there isn't much in the way of support, but again, he's going full overkill.

- SSDs only as they don't generate noise. M.2 is preferred for maximum reads.

- Black only. Very minimal LEDS, if any at all.

- Very powerful wifi card required

- Motherboard has to stay.

- Peripherals required

- OS Required

- 4400-4700$ is the line. 5000$ is the absolute maximum.

- He wants to have all the DIMM slots occupied.

Here's the list I've compiled below:

Anytime I see this price range, I think of X99 type. :P Just my opinion. Also I would want silent wings 3 for silence.

7700k outperforms the X99 line for gaming. Which is why I opted for it. I will definitely look into the silent wings 3! Thanks!

Build is silly. Also, Maximus IX Formula has pretty good onboard MU-MIMO ac Wi-Fi.
You could also simply go for a ModMic instead.

build is ehhh, could be better.

motherboard not needed for that price.

1x 1080Ti is enough for 1440p 144hz

storage is too little. you need mass storage too. yeah i know he wants silence but the WD Black is pretty quiet. and i'm guessing he'll have headphones on anyway so he won't hear any of it.

Having two gpu's will make it anything but silent unless you do a custom loop. Also the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3 will clash with the armour on the motherboard so you would have to remove it.

No, I won't get an illegitimate license. It can be deactivated at any point and it's illegal.

Spoke to him on break the other day. He's very insistent on the SLI and no HDDs. Switched out the fans and changed the motherboard. He says 1tb is enough for him for now. He can get more storage later if he so chooses. As for the cooler, he says he really likes it and would very much prefer to keep it.

He intends to go for a three monitor gaming set up one day. As far the ultra wide, I'll ask next time I see him.

@QuantumElement

Since he wants it ultra-quiet, you may want to go overkill on the PSU, as at low loads the fan will be virtually silent (if not completely so).

This one seems pretty good, and it's rated a T1 on the list here:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16817139129

It only adds another $100 to the build, but will reduce the fan noise level from the PSU.

You can remove the mounting brackets for the HDD's, to fit longer video cards.  The H440 is pretty customizable (we sell it at the store I work at).  As for the mootherboards (both of them), I don't see any issue with fitting the two cards on there.  It would be tight, but I believe it would work.

@QuantumElement,

Current generation AIO cpu coolers are not inherently louder than air towers. Especially if they are mounted as intakes which contains a good deal of the sound in the case. Besides, since they intake or exhaust air, one generally does not need to add more fans.

A bit pricy, but Dominator Platinum Blackout memory has great specs and looks nice. At this budget, high performance memory makes sense. Especially since it can make a difference in a number of titles. If he insists on filling all four slots, there is a 4x8GB kit. But he would be much better off going with just two sticks. This will put marginally less load on the memory controller and allow for an upgrade should that ever be necessary. There is no inherent performance difference.

If SLI is a must, then I would suggest a larger psu. With cpu and gpu overclocking 850W becomes a little tight.

Since he wants it ultra-quiet, you may want to go overkill on the PSU, as at low loads the fan will be virtually silent (if not completely so).

This one seems pretty good, and it's rated a T1 on the list here:

It only adds another $100 to the build, but will reduce the fan noise level from the PSU.

He doesn't need 1200W. A good 850W such as the Corsair RMi would be fine and still quiet as the fan isn't noisy even at full speed.

Yeah, he just told me he would like an ultra-wide monitor. One will be good for now.

He's completely dismissing the idea of an AIO. So, Air cooling is the only option.

As amazing as the G3 SuperNOVA is, I have heard that the fan can be loud. RMx series has very silent fans, so I'll go with that.

Dark Rock Pro 3 is a great cooler. I think it's rated for a 140-175 TDP? So, low profile RAM has to be a thing.

I have a question. All he is doing is gaming, gaming with many many mods, and web browsing. I think 16gb is more than enough for a long while. But even still, should he go for 32gb of RAM?

According to EVGA information, http://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=220-G3-1000-X1, at ~700W the G3 1000 should be around 30 dBA. In a silent case like the Define R5 that should not even be noticeable.

Low profile memory is definitely a must with the Dark Rock Pro 3. You may want to consider Corsair LPX.

The o/s and some ssd drivers will use excess memory to improve storage performance. If 32GB fits comfortably in the budget, I would go for it.

Well, of course EVGA will say that :P. And he won't go for the Define R5. He likes the H440 after looking at it. 30db doesn't sound good to him. Better to go for a 850 watt RMx, as that fan is barely ever on and is very quiet.

I am not trying to change minds.

Both the G3 and RMx have active fan management, as do most modern high quality psu. Both units will have very similar fan profiles. That is not to say that the G3 will be as quiet as the RMx when the fan is working, just that the G3 fan will be as idle as the RMx fan.
