Why do all Z170/270 boards have the same # of USB ports?

Why do all of the Z170/270 boards have the same number of USB ports/general I/O? Is it all down to the count of USB from the chipset? My previous AMD board had like 12 USB ports, but my current one only has like 6.

The chip-set does dictate max number of ports without an expander hub, but like enderman said, they don't.

The chipset determines how many SATA, USB, etc. that you can have on a single board. It's up to the manufacturers to figure out how they want to split it.

They very much DON'T have the same number of ports

(NOT counting front panel headers) My Asus Z170 Pro Gaming has 1 3.1 Type A, 1 3.1 Type C, 4 3.0's and 2 2.0's where a Z170 Maximus Hero VIII has 3 3.1 Type A's, 1 3.1 Type C and 4 3.0's and NO 2.0's and a budget board like the Asus Z170-E only has 2 2.0's, 2 3.0's and 1 Type C.
