I can get a 1070 for $200 off a friend or buy a second rx480 for the same price.

1070 for sure then.

I'm just trying to run a few games at 120+ fps on low settings with an fx 8350.

I currently have an rx480 8gb.

BF1 currently runs at 120fps on low but has major frame dips sometimes.

I always hear "get the single fastest card you can afford" so I'm going to recommend getting the 1070. But before you do that, I would recommend upgrading the fx if you want.

I think an 8350 would hamstring you in trying to reach 120fps on most games. So actually I'd say upgrade the CPU.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

i would get rid of the FX chip if you can. it's very old architecture. it's probably why you're getting some dips in BF1. and it'll probably get slightly worse if you get a 1070 or add another 480

Just like these 2 said.

I would recommend the 1500/x or even the 1600 for extra longevity.

That won't be for a while.

I'd need to replace just about everything, and I need to deal with the gpu issues I have anyways which is cheaper.

It hasnt been in BF1. I run it fine most of the time, when the GPU gets over heated I drop to around 12fps and I have to shut off my rig.

From what I understand, CrossFire and SLI support are both a bit iffy, not existing on some games. Since you already have a 480, I guess you could just buy another and keep it cheap and simple, but the 1070 would probably be a safer option. You're likely to have fewer issues with a single card with higher performance if you can afford it. I've never looked into this extensively or done it myself though, so this should be treated as heresay.

I'd recommend looking into it a bit more, search around a bit.

Probably something from Intel if OP's trying to reach 120fps plus. Even an i5-7500 will probably do it.

Oh that overheating is a big problem. You should be able to run 24/7 without overheating.

You NEED a new CPU.

No questions asked.

The newer games will take advantage of more cores/ threads.

If OP wants to keep his ram then he could go for a used 4790k rig i guess..

Hey now, the FX aren't so bad, they're not Q6600s.

(But of course OP needs a new CPU if they want to hit continuous 120fps on any game).

I'm hitting 100-150 fps in Dota 2 on a Sandy Bridge Xeon for instance, on max. And that's only a little stronger.

It runs fine on the settings I have for most games since I leave everything on low for everything.

Ok, then that's what I'll be picking up here in a few.

The 1070 will have the same performance in crossfire configured games + will have less stuttering.

Sandy bridge isn't 50% faster, so I wouldn't say blow out of the water.

I know someone with a 1070 and a FX 8350 and the 1070 doesn't run anywhere near it's potential. I have a Ryzen 1700 with a 1070 and it's smooth as butter.  So you should definitely replace the CPU before you even think about a graphics card upgrade.

As I've said numerous times, I cant afford to do that for a while.

I can't just magically put close to a grand in my bank account without having issues.
