What RAM will work with Ryzen?

Hi guys,

 

I noticed that some RAM says "Compatible with Ryzen" or something close. I was wondering whether only RAM with that mark works with Ryzen or whether all RAM works but those dims just work better?

It may be a stupid question but I am a first time builder PC rookie.

For now, go only with kits that work with Ryzen. 3200MHz RAM seems to be the best price for performance.

they'll all work, but some may be more fuss than others to get working optimally.

 

the ones that claim ryzen compatibility are the ones that pretty much warrant that it'll run at rated speeds out the box.

More than just the "compatible with Ryzen" RAM works with Ryzen. Check the motherboard QVL

Anything on the QVL will likely work at the speeds stated in the list. RAM not in the QVL may not work in rare cases or more likely will only work at stock or lower speeds (2133-2400).

notice none of their kits run over 3000 MHz.

My G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200 MHz kit only goes to 2400 since it's dual-rank and the dies are Hynix rather than Samsung.

 

I'm waiting for BIOS updates to fix it.

I don't think a BIOS update can fix the rank issues on Ryzen, but I could be wrong.

Most memory will work no problem, but maybe not at their highest speed. I know G.Skill's FlareX and Fortis are quite well supported (FlareX being clocked higher) as well as generally RAM with Samsung memory

My ram isn't on the QVL list and works fine, not at the rated 3000Mhz speed, but at 2666Mhz so far, and hopefully with updates to the BIOS more ram will be able to work at XMP settings. I think it would be rare for RAM to not work at all... would welcome any actual real life cases where people have found this.

For reference my ram is dual rank

CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz CL15

I probably would pick better RAM if buying specifically for Ryzen, but had this already from a previous build.

I can't find any sources. All I've been able to find are explanations of memory ranks and chipsets.

So no, it doesn't work "just fine". What's the point in paying more for faster RAM to find that actually you can't run it at the advertised speed?

Any Non-ECC DDR4 Kit will work with the Ryzen Platform.

Who said anything about paying more? and yes it works fine, because it works... if you cared to read my post properly instead of trying to jump on someone for some unnessesarily vague reason, you would notice the rest of what I said about it, like "if I was buying new ram specifically for ryzen I would buy something else" or words to that effect. I've had this ram for a while and so chose to use that instead of buying new, get your facts straight,

In programming languages =/= means "is not equal to". Though, I'd prefer just typing out "not equal" rather than someone mistaking it for "equals or equals".

Would you never take food back because as long as it is physically possible to put down your throat, it's fine? If it doesn't work at the advertised speed, it's not "fine". Technically speaking DDR4 only has to be 2133 or above. If you are promised 3.2 GHz, but only get 2.1 then that is not "working fine". And in response to your very first sentence, 3200 RAM does indeed cost more than 2400, so you are paying more for RAM which is supposed to be faster.

 

Considering 100% of the issue is with the RAM working as advertised (and not simply at all), I would not give advice like it being limited to the same speed as much, much cheaper RAM but that not being an issue. It very much is, and would still be so if Ryzen didn't tie its inter-core latency to its RAM speed.

I was telling me experience with it, not anyone else's. Also I didn't advise anyone. I also didn't advise anyone to pay more for faster RAM... you really need to go to specsavers dude, you're not reading what I have actually said for some reason and choose to view your own version of what was actually said.
