144Hz or IPS monitor?

Hello. I'm currently planning a new build, and also wanted to purchase a new monitor. But I'm still not sure if I should go for 144Hz or one with an IPS panel. I play games like GTA V, Watch Dogs 2, Need For Speed, stuff like that, I'm not into first person or shooter games (because supposedly that's what 144Hz monitors are betetr at). But also someone told me that if I exceed 60fps it may cause screen tearing, so that's why it's better to get a 144Hz one. So I'm not really sure what to do, honestly. When it comes to my build, I'm planning on getting a Ryzen 5 (still not sure which one yet, maybe the 1600x) and a R9 380 2GB (it's the one I currently have so.. I'll have to stick with that one for a while to reduce cost)

If you can play the games above 60 fps consistently you can use v sync to lock it, if it falls below 60fps it steps down to 30fps v sync I think. I'd check for a 144Hz ips panel with free sync. If you can find one that's not to much more you'll enjoy it

and even if you cant go above 60 fps you can upgrade your gpu latter

I recently switched from an 60hz ultrawide 29" IPS to a 144hz IPS 27" and now I don't intend of going back to slow 60hz. Its so much smoother.

I play on an IPS display. I barely notice the screen tearing. It is there occasionally but isn't that bad.

1.) I would buy a monitor as a long term investment.  Don't buy something that fits you now although you know you want something different in 2 years. Get something decent right away. 

 

3.) I would personally get an ips display. I switched back and forth  (tested a couple of different monitors about 2 years ago and went through 4k, 1440p, ips and tn) and I really don't want to go back to a tn screen. However, that is totally down to prefefence.

 

4.)I was also thinking about a 144hz display, but most games I play are just around 60-75 fps on high or ultra settings with my gpu and that will get worse over time, so why should I bother with high refresh rates that I cannot take advantage of?  And think about what kind of a gpu you would need to run AAA titles at 144hz. If you just want to play CS:GO, Overwatch and the likes, then higher refresh rate monitors make sense.  

 

 

Just something to consider. 

I personally have a freesync monitor with a range of 40-75hz, which is decent.  75hz does feel smoother than 60 and freesync is a nice touch.  The immersion is much greater with an ips display  imho.

check out the Samsung C24FG70, its a 144hz va panel monitor with quantum dot technology and also has freesync. Apparently its as good as ips but I don't know because ive never owned an ips display ever but currently using this monitor is incredible. Only downside is its 1080p.

I game on an IPS panel 60hz never noticed anything odd or out of the ordinary, just lots of pretty colours <3 

 

Down to personal preference and what you'll use the monitor for most, 144hz is a big step up for gaming and you'd certainly appreciate it but if your bias is on productivity then maybe getting a big IPS display a bit higher up on your budget might suit you better?

 

again personal preference :) 

 

EDIT: No budget was stated by OP soo why not go for something over 60hz that is IPS? just going to throw MG279Q out there as an example, IPS and 144hz.

Asus MX27AQ. thats all i got to say.. full 100% rgb colors 60hz monitor also 1440p 

 

 

best i've ever seen...

 

people are overrating 144hz 

 

mostly games like CS:GO you will appreciate the  144hz because its competitive online..

 

developers dont make normal games to play 144hz..they're gfx engine are designed to run at smooth 60hz...

 

and i mean games like RE7, Dark souls, witcher 3, gears of war, call of duty etc...

IPS is superior in everyway and you can find higher refresh rate IPS panels, I don't know why every one in here acts as if ALL IPS are 60hz, my ultrawide 1080p IPS runs at 80hz.

 

The only reason you should get a 144hz TN panel is if you play cs:go A LOT, any thing else will see better performance with the IPS and if you can find one of those 75hz or more IPS panels you already rule out any "smoothness" issue.

I actually didn't know there were 144Hz IPS monitor lol. My bad. I'm looking for some models right now. Where I live prices are insane, so I might have to sell a leg or two to buy one.. Oh well..

When you say ips, you want it for image quality and accurate colours, this is where Samsung VA panels with quantum dot technology surpasses that. We are talking about SRGB125% (were typical ips panels are only SRGB100%), deeper blacks (no ips glow), good viewing angles and available in 144hz. The one I'm using is the Samsung C24FG70 curved 24inch 1080p monitor, also with freesync. Unfortunately if you don't like curved, ignore this comment because as of now, all of Samsung's gaming monitors are curved. also if you want one with 1440p, there is only 34 inch for that as well also with freesync. Now I've never used an ips panel before so don't go aggressive on me for being biased, I suggest checking in your local store if there might be on and see for your self.

 

Edit: In the US Samsung website, the monitor I have is around $300USD but I bought it for $600AUD because that's the price in Australia (monitors in AUS are expensive)

144hz is not only for CSGO and fast paced shooter, that's what a misinformed person would say. Even games like Witcher 3 will benefit from a higher refresh rate, it makes everything look ultra smooth if you can push it. IPS doesn't provide better graphics, just slightly better colors. Sure, it looks better than TN but not enough to sacrifice 144hz. Honestly, good TN monitors like the S2716DG look very good. Saying 144hz is only for certain very limited gamers is like saying IPS is only for graphic designers.

Unless you get a really shite IPS panel, your game will look better than it does on even a very expensive TN panel.  And it's not only games, everything will look better on the IPS panel.

 

I count better colors and more viewing angle under "better graphical experience".  Smoothness is great, but I (and many others) tend to run slower-paced and single player games like GTA or the Witcher 3 on the highest settings we can get away with while still getting an acceptable framerate.

 

 

Don't get me wrong, when I was heavily into CS:S I used a 17in flat CRT for way longer than anyone can really justify.  I totally appreciate how in certain types of gameplay you'd want those shorter frametimes, but the specific games OP mentioned see seriously diminishing returns once you get past a consistent 60fps.

I have a 60hz IPS panel on my left,, and a 144hz tn panel on my right (both 1080p)

 

I've never tried gaming on an IPS panel, but I just personally love the smoothness of 144hz, even if im only getting 90-120 in some games and I'm no longer utilizing all 144hz on my GTX970. I cant do the luight video creating i do on the TN though, the IPS is way better for color.

You can get both. You can get a 144hz, or even higher IPS monitor. It's not some mythical creature that doesn't exist.
