Next iteration of uTorrent to be Web Based

An article from Bleeping Computer has quoted Bram Cohen (creator of the BitTorrent protocol) as stating that the next version of uTorrent will be moving to a web based interface from the desktop client.  The article is quoting Mr. Cohen from an episode of the 'Steal This Show' podcast from the weekend as saying:

"The plan is to consolidate the business, focus on revenues. [...] We are also taking up the opportunity to clean up our client experience," Cohen said.

 

"So from a product standpoint the new rev of uTorrent will run in the user's default browser," he added. "It's a nicer experience, it's a better way to present content. It can do a bunch of that Maelstrom type functionality of displaying the whole thing like [...] a web page, basically, and still being very lightweight. [W]e're [making it] using modern widgets and we're gonna have a greatly improved streaming experience in that we created some great technologies for."

According to the article, some of this has been tried in the past several times with things like standalone Javascript Libraries, the WebTorrent project and the Maelstrom browser.  Some of the technologies that they will be implementing will be those that were developed for the Maelstrom browser itself, however, this new version will supposedly run in the users default browser of choice.  The article thinks that they are looking at how a change to an Ad generated revenue model over the toolbar installation revenue generation is allowing them to move to this web-based client as opposed to the desktop client.  

 

Personally, I think this could be a good move, however, it will depend on how well the web-client is at preventing malware from being delivered and spread.  I am concerned about how much access to settings and how intrusive ads may be from the web-client over a desktop.  

 

For the sake of keeping this thread on track, please try not to go off on a tangent concerning the use of torrents for piracy of copyrighted material.

While this is good news for those that still use utorrent, I jumped ship long ago back when some of the advertisements they pushed into the client actually contained malicious payloads. This was fixed very quickly, but I'm now married to Trasmission-Daemon and its' accompanying web interface for all my Linux ISO downloading needs.

 

Still going to follow this news and see where it leads though. Since everything we do these days is mostly web browser based, this looks cool.

Why? It only puts web hosters at even greater risks of being targeted by groups like the RIAA and MPAA (whenever it's fair or not and whenever it's through the web hoster's implicit knowledge of illegal activity or not)

 

If it's just the client based on a web browser well Torch already has torrent support and has had it for a while.

MEGA  for a new torrent client, I guess. 

I understand why browser integration is better to monetize users. Also, that's why I hate it (looking at you, Google).

Then on a subjective basis, I dislike browser interfaces, so even without any other concern I prefer things but to be web base. However, we can all be happy through choice. The problem is they want them dollars, so there can't be choice.

Bittorrent is a brilliant tech, but part of the reason it's brilliant is its limited monetization potential.  You might change the world, but it doesn't mean it can produce Google revenue.  As the same time, a whole lot of things are going into browsers over clients.  Though much for that for monetization reasons, not really technical ones.  Though there is some security issues for it.

Does this mean µTorrent will be a daemon running on my system, and I access the local resources through my web browser (by for example going to 127.0.0.1:9001), or does this mean I will go to µTorrent's website and then access my downloads from there?

 

If it's the former, then it might be decent but I don't really care.

 

If it's the latter then it's one of the worst ideas I have heard in a long time. It will constantly be taken down by the MAFIAA. If your browser crashes you might have to restart the download. Depending on how they set things up you might need addons/plugins. Got a memory leak and want to restart your browser? Not possible without canceling your downloads! Their website is down? Too bad for you, you can't download anything. Logging users will also be far easier than right now.

 

 

Regardless of which one it is, I am happy I abandoned µTorrent. It really became a piece of shit after 2.2.1.

and what if i turn my browser off? i usually do that while gaming because i have lots of tabs open and need the ram. but uTorent i can keep running because if its low requirements integrating it into the browser is retarded.

I use Deluge on my server, and connect to that from my phone or pc to add torrents to it to download all my Chinese Cartoons

uTorrent still exists? stupids still use uTorrent? with transmission,qbittorrent, deluge utorent is history.

I think they want to create some combination of uTorrent+ Filestream.me(they make you pay for download capacity like MEGA) + popcorntime, but i wouldnt trust that shit even if you gave me the source code(not that i would read it) with all the data snooping by NSA,CIA,FBI and other entities id never use such a piece of crap, not to mention it will be slower, theres no way you can do efficient torrent processing in browser over a website, you need a native daemon running on your CPU to achieve good download rates without using a ton of resource.

It's likely to be some form of either Extension or WebApplet. Haha, in-browser Java Torrent Client. (Probably not, but it would be hilarious.)

 

As for why, part of the issue has always been monetization issues, but a lot of it has always been stuff on the backside that more than likely happened.  Bram blew up several fairly massive industries.  The fact he's still alive is probably the more impressive bit.  So Bram & company have always "played nice" with the authorities since they founded the main company, which this is just another aspect to that.

People don't realize how much Bittorrent changed the ability to get Linux Distros. It really made Linux viable for the end-user for a decade before the mass rollout of high-speed internet.
