How much of a difference will be switching from IPS to TN

Disketa

i am thinking of switching from my Dell S2415h (60hz, 1080p, 24", IPS) to an AOC AG271QX (144hz, 1440p, 27" S-TN). How much worse will the colours be? (I included the monitor name because i heard some TN monitors have better colours than other TN monitors). I would like to buy an IPS monitor but they are like 200$ more expensive than this TN monitor.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

The thing with TN panels is that it doesn't like getting looked at from different angles. Color will change if viewed outside the desired angle, which is often RIGHT IN FRONT OF the screen. This problem will be magnified when using a larger screen, so I suggest saving up for greater budget atm.

IPS is superior for colours and viewing angle. You are essentially downgrading so you may be dissatisfied by your purchase. It is true that a more expensive TN is better than a cheap TN but that still doesn't make it in the same league as the IPS.

tldr: You get what you pay for with monitors

The problem with viewing angles wont bother me, i always sit right in front if my monitor

If you sit close (about 50cm-75cm from the screen) then you will definitely notice TN color shift in the corners at 27" from that distance and it will be annoying.

I don't know about you, but I don't sit straight when watching videos. I just hate colour shifts at the corners when I move around

So should i save more for an IPS panel then? Problem is that the IPS 144hz monitors are very expensive in my country, the one i am looking at costs 500$ and an IPS costs 675$

I've got a 27 inch 1440p TN, and two 24 inch 1080p TN's at home.  I also do not "move around" while watching videos, the color shift is only visible when literally walking around my desk, I can even lay down in a bed and tilt my head towards the screen and still watch movies/youtube just fine.

I can say that IPS does have better colors but TNs aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I use IPS at work and they really aren't necessary unless you have a bunch of extra money, or you do some sort of professional work where the colors need to be ~100% color accurate.

Don't forget that with all monitors you can use the monitor settings and software settings to adjust RGB and Gamma as necessary too.

@Disketa However, if there is no issue waiting and saving for the IPS... I'd say save for the IPS :)

What country are you in? In the US at least 144Hz 1440p Freesync IPS/VA is usually around the same price as TN.

Same Panel as the Asus MG279Q

Nixeus should be coming out with its own model as well for a bit more in the near future; their pre-orders just ended on Massdrop yesterday.

Holly crap the difference is enormous. My friend has to keep some of his PC stuff at my house so I decided to hook up his TN monitor to compare with my IPS panel. Lets say I didn't use it very long and quickly went back to my IPS monitor

I have the Dell U2414H IPS Monitor.

And got a new Main monitor: Dell S2417dg (one of those newer 1440p 8bit TN panels).

A slight bit tweaking, and Colors looked almost the same.

5 weeks later i got the Acer XB241YU, same here (switched because better OSD.

Here are some comparisons (not from me): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B_-kLCvWk3ZrTS1XVm15WGJjMzQ

From Left to Right:

Dell U2414H ---> Dell S2417DG (tn) --> Asus PG279Q

BIG EDIT: Sorry. IPS with 144 Hz is NOT better overall. It has better color reproduction and viewing angles, Yes. But: Today's 144 Hz IPS screens suffer from very bad Quality control (Even Asus/acer etc, tho you might be more lucky there.).

Bad Backlightbleeding, Clouding, an unusual high amount of dead pixels etc.

People refer to this as "IPS Lottery".

The panel Manufacturer (AU-Optronics) has like no Quality control at all, so.. yea. Good Luck there.

i've seen more than enough people buying 5+ Units of an Asus / Acer model (the best / expensive ones), and they send all back. Backlightbleeding, Whites were too yellowish, etc etc.

You CAN go to IPS. But you will still have compromises to make, for a higher Price. Try it out for yourself^^

I have both an IPS and TN 144hz.

The color difference is noticeable.

I use the TN 144hz for gaming.

The IPS has noticeable Input lag and a slight motion blur < would never use it for gaming.

I think it would be best to get an higher grade LED 144hz instead of TN, like those from BenQ if you wanted "gaming".

I agree on that. Everyone on here praises IPS. I just got an IPS monitor and a laptop with an IPS screen. They're better than my TN panels, but just by a little bit. I have no trouble going back and forth between them.

i paid £800 for a 4k TN monitor.. thats about £600 more than the average person pays 9_9

op, a good quality TN panel and an average quality IPS display will be almost indistinguishable, unless youre sat at a stupid angle that youll never use.

i went from a top end 4k TN display to a $1400 IPS ultrawide, and when sat next to each other i wasnt blown away (other than ultrawides are the dogs danglies)
