SK Hynix confirms GDDR6 in 2018

Memory module maker SK Hynix has just announced their 27nm process GDDR6 8Gb/s modules with I/O data transfer rate of 16Gb/s per pin. These new ram chips will be use in a upcoming high-end graphic card that has a 384bit memory interface and has a performance bandwidth of up to 768GB/s. GDDR6 will be 2x faster than GDDR5 while having 10% lower in voltage and it's the successor to both GDDR5 as well as the updated GDDR5X.

Currently SK Hynix is working closely with GPU clients to make sure there is enough GDDR6 memory modules, to meed the demands in 2018. Not only are GDDR6 made for graphic cards, it's also for other high bandwidth applications such as artificial Intelligence, autonomous vehicles, virtual reality, and 4K.

Jokes aside, I do wonder what's the difference in performance and the difference in costs with HBM. Speed is important, but so is a low enough cost such that it can be widely adopted.

HBM2 is no where near as easy to implement as traditional vRAM.

HBM is definitely the way to go for the medium term. Yes it's harder to engineer and implement,  but it offers huge improvements in signal integrity, areal density, power efficiency, and bus width. As soon as it becomes price-competitive with GDDR then we'll see more of it being used. Especially in mobile applications where size and power consumption are critical.

Well, kinda expected evolution since HBM tech is still expensive and definitely not good choice for anything that is not high end. So I expect HBM2 to be on top tier GPUs.

Actually HBM is a great choice for mobile for some of the reasons I pointed above, but the 1st gen was just too expensive. I wouldn't be surprised to see HBM or HBM-based technology used on smartphones, tablets, and laptops in the next 2-3 years

And combine that with the die stacking AMD showed a while back for their big server SoC/APU for even more space saving.

AMD had it a generation ago. Also it's in the Tesla cards from Nvidia so I expect the new Titan to have it as well.

Even if GDDR6 hits 768GB/s, it'll still be far slower than HBM2 which will come in at 1TB/s on 4-die configurations.

Exactly.... why the slow turn away from HBM...it's like they hype everyone up for it....then steer us away slowly away from it. I'm very confused on this issue. We have been hearing about HBM longer than GDDR6 but I assure you, we will see the GDDR6 more so in mass than any single HBM/2 card I bet.

Partly. Hynix helped develop it too. NVIDIA is using HBM on their Tesla P100 cards, aren't they?
