Uber tracked users who deleted the app before 2015

So, this story surfaced today.

Apple CEO Tim Cook threatened to have Uber’s iPhone app removed from the App Store in 2015, when it learned that the ride-sharing company had secretly found a way to identify individual iPhones, even once the app was deleted from the phone, according to The New York Times.

The practice, called fingerprinting, is prohibited by Apple. To prevent the company from discovering the practice, Uber geofenced Apple headquarters in Cupertino, changing its code so that it would be hidden from Apple Employees. Despite their efforts, Apple discovered the activity, which led to the meeting between the two CEOs, in which Cook told Kalanick to end the practice. If Uber didn’t comply, Cook told him, Uber’s app would be removed from the App Store, a move that would be a huge blow to the ride-sharing company. According to the article, “Mr. Kalanick was shaken by Mr. Cook’s scolding, according to a person who saw him after the meeting,” and ended the practice.

 

Welp, this sounds almost as cheeky as Volkswagen emission scandal. Luckily they got caught, but this does show how far some companies will go to track you and to get away while doing it.

They should've removed the app immediately when they found out, and only allowed it back on when Uber stopped.

This shows companies that they can track you, until somebody finds out. there should have been a real punishment.

Absolutely. Otherwise, they don't lose anything by trying, and they indeed benefit for some time.

A more aggressive policy against these practices would give me some more trust in these platforms. The way things are, there's no reason to trust apps inside or outside "walled gardens", whatever they claim to be doing (and I'd say, even fewer reasons to trust those running the "walled gardens").

Does removing it from the app store stop people who already have it from using it? Because if that's the case they could end up screwing people over who needed to use Uber during that time period.

I think the tracking only affects the IOS app.

 

I'm pretty sure the Windows 10 app isn't affected by this.
