Thinking of selling 4930k for R5 1600

Hello team,

 

Currently I'm running:

•  i7 4930K (4,2GHz @ 1.2V) 
• ASUS X79-Deluxe MOBO 
• 24GB (6x4) DDR3 @ 1866MHz HyperX
• Hyper 212 EVO

 

I'm considering selling this combo, and buying a hexacore from AMD instead. The R5 1600 really caught my eye. Mostly I just play games like Witcher 3 / Doom @ 1080p 144Hz with a GTX 1070, but I might start doing some productivity/content creation/streaming in the future. Here's a list I made with the changes I'm thinking on: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/

Reason why I'm thinking of this jump is:

• Lower TDP
• Higher IPC (both single + multi core than Ivy-Bridge E)
• DDR4 3000MHz over my 1866MHz (seeing as Ryzen benefits from faster RAM. Some games like higher RAM frequencies too, especially Witcher 3 like I play a lot )
• NH-D15 over 212 EVO for lower temps + noice. (Will be fun seeing temp difference between 212 EVO & 140W TDP to NH-D15 & 65W TDP )

 

So, what do you guys think? Are these valid reasons to go from an Intel Hexacore to an AMD Hexacore, or should I just keep my 4930k? I'm not interested in quad or octa-cores from either Intel / AMD. I find Hexacores to be perfect balance between gaming / productivity. Thanks in advance

i think it will be worth the upgrade.

Keep your 4930K. Since it is overclocked to 4.5GHz it won't be any slower than a Ryzen 5 CPU at 4GHz (which is the max for Ryzen) It is more of a sidegrade TBH.

Performance increase in games won't be super high, but I think the RAM difference is the biggest advantage, with it being faster + being available in higher capacities.

Plus, with the X79 boards still being in quite high demand + that chip selling for some decent money, I think you could probably just be shy of breaking even when selling it and getting the Ryzen combo..

 

Also, good choice for cooler.

i doubt there is much of an upgrade, its going to be a nice upgrade if you consider the RAM and so on so see if you can get someone buying your current stuff before you upgrade

Increase will be very small, especially since your CPU overclocks higher. I'd just keep it.

Go for it, I am also thinking about the Ryzen hexa core, the TDP is really impressive, and since you can sell your PC for nice money still, I would do it.

@Tech Wizard Upgrade your cooler to a Kraken X62 and OC your CPU to 4.7 or so GHz at 1.4V. You will get better performance than a Ryzen 5 1600 at 4GHz.

Well he can still sell his Computer for a lot, I dont know if the difference will be that high. For 400$ its really not worth, unless he lives in Germany and leave the Computer on all the time

Nah, he can't. He would have to sell his CPU with the motherboard and RAM for less than $250...

I don't know about you, but I would definitely buy a 4930K with an X79 board and 24GB of RAM for a lot more than $250. Maybe like $320 or so at least. maybe $350 or even more depending on the situation.

I wouldn't. For $320 I would get a new Ryzen 5 1600 system, instead of a used 4930K system.

Yes, and DDR3 is still expensive, even used, and 24GB is a big amount.

They are expensive, but I don't think that anyone would invest in an Ivy Bridge system if he can build a Ryzen 5 system for about the same price

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to stick with my 4930k. Biggest reason I wanted to switch was because 140W vs 65W TDP, and 1866MHz vs 3000MHz. Guess I will wait for new launches on CPUs from both teams

Idea of upgrading to a better cooler is interesting indeed. I don't like AiOs, which is why I added the NH-D15 in the PCpartpicker list. I guess the D15 is the strongest air cooler out there (correct me if I'm wrong)? I wonder what temperature differences I would get from going to 212 EVO to for example NH-D15 at same overclocks, case, setup etc... Probably 6-8 celsius I would assume

An NH-D15 performs like a 240mm AIO, so it will be a decent upgrade from your Hyper 212.
