Hey guys, suggest me that which of legacy operating systems that I should drive, I have already chosen MS-DOS 6.22 first, suggest me something that  is not windows predates dates the Year 2000 since I like exploring operating systems.

Linux predates 2000. So does BSD. If you actually want a version of Linux or BSD from before 2000, BSD might be better.

Try a ZX Spectrum emulator

Windows 3.11 is interesting too

I don't know of many OSes that predate 2000, but BeOS might be interesting. AmigaOS too, if you can find an old version anywhere.

OS 2/WARP could be interesting.

On the home PC segment, I think all/most mainstream computers used DOS, until Windows came along - first as a UI running on top of DOS - actually in some ways DOS was still running under Windows 9x (also WinME).

If you want to go even older, I guess CP/M was a thing.

Could'nt get DOS 6.22 On The HDD,but i did manage to sorta dual-boot MS-DOS 7.1 and tried Windows 3.1 and it was a pain in the butt and even after fiddling around with system.ini it says that the Amount Of something like PageOverlay or something and said it should be less than 4,well system.ini doesnt have that subsetting (windows 3.1 does boot in Standard Mode But Not 386Ehc Mode (C2D FTW) ) i do have the file w3xstart.exe in my Windows installdisk dir,but that gives a error aswell (if you can find me a Windows 3.1 ISO It should work and thanks if you can)

Thanks

Agree. It was awesome, it was what Windows 95 should have been. :)

Write in C.

Thanks

Almost impossible to run some old OSs on new hardware. So run it through DosBox. It's a good emulator, acts and feels like the real thing. If you want more advanced emulation of old hardware try the Bochs emulator.

I'm quite sure that is considered piracy and we are not allowed to share links here (or even ask for it).

But put the right words in to google search, and you should find among top results a sort of OS museum site that has downloads for loads of obsolete OSes (including DOSes, CP/M and Windowses).

Also, Windows 3.1 is so old it was never released as a CD (AFAIK).

Apple 2?

The atari computer?

Unix was invented in like ... 1920's?

Edit:

1970's

i thought there was an os invented in the 1920s or something.. perhaps I suffered a recent concussion... :/

Lol, a birthday card that sings a song to you has more computing power than the Allies had during WW2.[citation needed] I don't think there were any operating systems in the 1920s.

I doubt it was any different, unless you wanna talk about conspiracy theories.

Early computers were built to perform a series of single tasks, like a calculator. Basic operating system features were developed in the 1950s, such as resident monitor functions that could automatically run different programs in succession to speed up processing. Operating systems did not exist in their modern and more complex forms until the early 1960s.[8] Hardware features were added, that enabled use of runtime libraries, interrupts, and parallel processing. When personal computers became popular in the 1980s, operating systems were made for them similar in concept to those used on larger computers.

In the 1940s, the earliest electronic digital systems had no operating systems. Electronic systems of this time were programmed on rows of mechanical switches or by jumper wires on plug boards. These were special-purpose systems that, for example, generated ballistics tables for the military or controlled the printing of payroll checks from data on punched paper cards. After programmable general purpose computers were invented, machine languages (consisting of strings of the binary digits 0 and 1 on punched paper tape) were introduced that speed up the programming process (Stern, 1981).[full citation needed]

In the early 1950s, a computer could execute only one program at a time. Each user had sole use of the computer for a limited period of time and would arrive at a scheduled time with program and data on punched paper cards or punched tape. The program would be loaded into the machine, and the machine would be set to work until the program completed or crashed. Programs could generally be debugged via a front panel using toggle switches and panel lights. It is said that Alan Turing was a master of this on the early Manchester Mark 1 machine, and he was already deriving the primitive conception of an operating system from the principles of the universal Turing machine.[8]

Later machines came with libraries of programs, which would be linked to a user's program to assist in operations such as input and output and generating computer code from human-readable symbolic code. This was the genesis of the modern-day operating system. However, machines still ran a single job at a time. At Cambridge University in England the job queue was at one time a washing line (clothes line) from which tapes were hung with different colored clothes-pegs to indicate job-priority.[citation needed]

An improvement was the Atlas Supervisor introduced with the Manchester Atlas commissioned in 1962, "considered by many to be the first recognisable modern operating system".[9]Brinch Hansen described it as "the most significant breakthrough in the history of operating systems."[10]

Almost impossible to run some old OSs on new hardware. So run it through DosBox. It's a good emulator, acts and feels like the real thing. If you want more advanced emulation of old hardware try the Bochs emulator.

Windows 3.0 Will not start up and crash, but win 3.1,a little bit of luck,it says a PageOverCommit in System.INI is too big,but the problem is....the setting doesnt exist in My system.ini, adding it wont help

I've run Windows 98 (a long time ago..xD) on that laptop, works perfect just no working drivers,Win95 no luck it would freeze on initail startup, and i remember, messing with system.ini got it to give the error, not enough ram to start windows, that was the Win95 dos from 1995 (ofcourse) and might be based on DOS622 since that could be one of the problems of dos622.I've got over 20 replies suggesting me to use DosBox or Emulators in my other threads on My Threads "The MSDOS 5.00 Experiment which failed and "The MSDOS 6.22 Experiment" which also failed (i was able to boot from the emulated floppy, but it would detect my FAT Partition (Dualboot With Vista)now i exacly know why both of them didint work and before my failure of that, the hdd i was trying to install it on also failed after my experiment with the ssd failed, lol, anyway that was a 2007 HDD) Emulating could feel real, but isnt real at all,and there is no fun in installing DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1 and have no problems because you were able to search on google.

Windows 3.1 did'nt need a product key,its already abandonware, and if its not allowed, why are we allowed to ask for help and share links to parts

Ada Lovelace, as some readers here may know, made the first computer programs in the first half of 19th century. Maybe they (with Charles Babbage) had some kind of operating system, too? Never mind they actually ever completed the mechanical computer, and the programs only existed on paper ;-)

I recommend reading about Ada Lovelace or looking up some videos/documentaries on Youtube. Crazily interesting stuff B|

It requiring or not requiring a product key has nothing to do with it being piracy or not. Abandonware is still piracy...

Asking for help is a totally different thing than asking for links to some (proprietary) software. Technically, I believe it is in the gray zone even to have this whole thread here on this subject (I just checked the community standards). Oh, wait, no it isn't, I just remembered we all have legal ways to obtain all the abandoned OSes, don't we??? :P

In any case, I definitely wouldn't link to any abandonware, no matter how old it is. Don't want to try the limits of the admins (just use Google, it's quite easy in this case).

Buy a 486 if you want real then.

I tried to tell you before: Running an OS with hardware that was made 20-30 years after the OS (or other peace of software) became obsolete, is like asking for trouble.

The largest obstacle is MBR/GPT division. If you can skip / work around that, there can be obscure bugs because of too fast processors for example (among other issues). Dual booting was not a thing during most of these OSes hayday. Good luck trying to get any sound card working, if you want to for example play games. Earlier PCI sound cards had MS-DOS utilities to use them in DOS -mode.

The best thing would be to own contemporary hardware (of the target OS era). But that is not always practical. An emulator tries to create an environment for which the OS was designed for. A VM (like BOCHS as suggested by someone above) is would the most sensible way, and actually in the end could feel more authentic than running something on a piece of HW it was never designed for (as it can be at least in theory configured to mimic hw of that era).

Another problem of running older OSes and such on modern x86 hardware: support for the A20 gate has been dropped since Haswell. If you're not aware, this was to address the problem known as the A20 Line bug. Many applications exploited an addressing quirk in the original 8086/8088 which involved this bug.

So trying to run any real-mode application is a risk on modern x86 hardware.

Exactly, I want my Prince of Persia to load in 8 seconds otherwise it won't feel like the good old days. Not to mention The Incredible Toon Machine having a laggy cursor on 386. When it was smooth on the 486 I felt like I made a $1000 upgrade. In fact, today to get the same jump in performance it would take more than $5k :)
