Physical Video Rental

yathis

Saw one today, immigrant corner convenience store, 1/3 to 1/4 of the floor space dedicated to what looked like bluray. Its in a middle-to-high income neighborhood, but on the outskirts of town with a lot of ranch houses and ranches nearby, also horses lots and lots of cow-boy/girls around.

I have never seen one in this day in age. Never.

Have any of you seen any?

Still 2 Videotron stores I'm my hometown. French language availability might be the main reason they're still open.

I actually have a membership at Bay Street Video here in Toronto.  One of the city's longest lasting and best video rental locations.  As the staff say there; 'People come here when they can't find something on Netflix' and that's exactly what I came for.  Particularly I was looking for the 1999 Hot Docs winner 'The Cola Conquest' on DVD.  It's not available on any streaming service and even for piracy, low quality 240p rips were all that existed, but this store had the DVD.  I've since gone back or other rentals of things that are trickier to find.  The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and it's a fun experience when I go.

There's a convenience store not too far from me that rents out movies.

Video rental is also still a thing at some gas stations I've been to.

But there are probably not any dedicated video rental stores left where I live. Blockbuster went belly up sometime in 2013, and the mom'n'pop stores went shortly after.

There aren't really anywhere left to buy physical movies either.

There is http://20thcenturyflicks.co.uk/ in Bristol (UK), they even have their own little 11 seater cinema. There is room for a small number of specialists. If you want watch a '40s Film Noir, or a '70s Blaxploitation film for example, Netflix is unlikely to be of any use so your options are to buy, or to rent, on DVD. Even many well know films such as The Godfather or Pulp Fiction, if you want to watch them legally it will probably involve a disc.

They are all over the place, usually in convenience stores. Though usually not the biggest chains like 7/11 or ShortStop, etc. Hasty Market seems to carry them often.

You also see the occasional small business rental company - though those are pretty rare now.

You should check your local Library - most of them lend (for free) movies. Most tend to only stock DVD, but some carry a Blu-Ray collection as well, or at least the odd movie in Blu-Ray or combo disc (one side Blu-Ray, one side DVD).

Aside from that, unless the rental price is stupid cheap (Like $1), you're better off just buying Blu-Ray's on sale on Amazon or in the Wal-Mart bargin bins for like $5 or $10 each.

Either you're not digging those bins enough, or your local Walmart sucks :P

I work at a Library and we have all current new release DVD's and a wide collection of older films. We have the odd Blu-Ray here and there, but it's mostly DVD's. We recently started a collection of PS4 and XBO games as well.

As for Walmart, they regularly have Blu-Ray bargain bins where you can sometimes find them for as low as $5 a pop or 2/$10 or 2/$15.

All the bluray bargain bins have movies which I don't want to watch

your library has those, mine doesn't. I live in a primarily Chinese neighbourhood

Yes that's important. I just rip them to my Media Server anyway. I lent my sister my set-top Blu-Ray player years ago and I haven't seen it since lol

There are a few here still, and i occasionally hear commercials on the radio for them as well.

The ones still kicking and thriving locally usually all have some sort of "adult" entertainment section.

I have fond memories of heading down to the local video store and renting 7 weekly movies for $7, sometimes it would take me an hour of roaming the isles to pick my 7 lol

If i could turn back time i would absolutely love to work in a store like that, spend all day renting games and movies to people, talking about their favourites and helping them with their selections.

Actually, that's the price we rent the latest releases against...

Where I live, we actually still have a Blockbuster...
