Wells Fargo Account Passwords are Not Case Sensitive

A user on Reddit discovered that Wells Fargo's website login does not have case sensitive passwords.

 

This is a huge security issue, it makes passwords much easier to crack as not all letters and combinations of upper and lower case need to be tried. If your password was "PassWoRd123" any variation of the word "password" would be accepted and log you in. Wells Fargo does offer 2 Factor Authentication, but it is not manditory, nor do they tell you that they even offer it. You need to go into your account settings in order to enable 2FA. This means that many customers, especially the older generations that would have mortgages, checking, savings, and investments are at a huge risk to being compromised. 

 

Even if you are not a Wells Fargo customer, check with your bank's site and make sure they are using case sensitive passwords, as another user pointed out in the thread:

As of posting this, I have tested with my account and it still is not case sensitive.

Well, even without case sensitive letters, symbols and numbers are still used in conjunction with letters. I'm quite confident my passphrase can't be easily cracked even if limited in such a way.

you shouldn't use words in passwords (ironic eh?) anyways, regardless of capitalization. its better to make a sentence and add hashtags or @ signs. for example: 

 I love the 2nd amendment because i love #freedom = Ilt2@bIl#f

(just an example, not my actual opinion) its easy to remember and way more secure.

and their security practice was horrible for not using capitalization lol. i don't get how big company's make mistakes like that, do they not have someone with any security knowledge? i heard USA banks sometimes use a 6 digit pin number as login code like wtf, they say its so you can login via calling them lol. don't know if that's still the case though, it was a few years ago.

Longer and easily remembered is better than short and cryptic. Brute force password hacking will go thru all those symbols in that short password long before it gets to the end of a long password like seveneightninemainstreetTacomaWashingtonninenineeleventhree.

 

Something as simple as spelling out a few numbers in your numerical area of a password can be a major security bonus.

Mine has six character max numbers or letters, not case sensitive. 

 

No two-factor.

 

Never heard of hacking and it's one of the biggest banks.

This only seems odd if you are operating under the assumption that its not the banks IT & corporate staff at the bank robing you.  Obviously they'd like to make things easy for themselves when the pull off their capper and make a mad dash for a miscellaneous Caribbean bank or where ever they stashed their booty from the housing crisis.

I have to say that I really appreciate this topic.

 

I brought up 2FA with bankers and tellers for a while and they never told me that they had this available--I have now turned it on and updated my password. I need to move my accounts at some point but this will at least give me a little piece of mind in the meantime.

 

Thanks to you @coonwhiz and the Redditor for bringing this up

Somewhere between the average persons 6 digit alphabetic password and the members of this forums 72 character-multi-language-17-factor-authentication is probably a healthy middle ground. 

 

Some of you sound like you're protecting the nuclear codes rather than your $88 bank account :P
