computer build (need assurance that i picked the right stuff)

so I'm going to be turning 18 here and 2 weeks then graduating highschool 3 weeks later. So what am I going to do spend about 800-1500$ building a tank of a gaming computer. the build I'm planning is going to play games in 1080p high settings at 60 fps. Now the problem I'm running into is planning and knowlage on the subject. I already planned on saving some money by keeping my gtx 970 4 gig card that is in my current computer ( its an office computer with a gtx 970 in it had 6 gigs of ddr3 ram and an i3 4170 3.70 ghz duel core socket lga 1150 so no room to upgrade and its intel) Now I'm switching to amd and don't know what to expect. my build plan is 16 gigs of ddr4 ripjaws series, msi tomahawk motherboard and a ryzen 7 chip ( the 3.6 ghz 8 core) now at this point I planned to do water cooling. however I don't know the first thing about how to do a water cooling system and just don't trust myself doing it. thermal paste is the diamond stuff I forget the name of it currently but have it bookmarked and saved on my computer. at this point I'm going with my old hard drive because downloading games from steam on a 3mbps connection is pure agony but I do plan on putting my os (wqindows 10) on a 120 gig ssd. now at this point I'm going with a new case because I don't have one that'll fit any of this stuff so I decided to go with the Cooler Master HAF 912 - Mid Tower along with 6 120 mm fans (3 intake and 3 exost) then a hub for a 3/4 pin fan hub ( thanks linus for showing those things off i have been taking notes) then I was planning on getting an 850 watt power supply I will put the links of what I plan on getting below now anyone who has a backround in computer building if theres any flaws in any of this please tell me and give me tips along the way

Ok so that build is a bit weird but I guess it's a good start. I would not get a 850 watt psu as you don't need that much. I would also get the r7 1700 and not the 1800x or 1700x. As far as water cooling goes it's not any harder than a air cooler if you use a AIO.

Good idea. It's a good card still and it will save you money.

8GB might be enough but if you got the money to spare then sure, go for 16GB.

That's a really low end board for such a high end CPU.

Might be good, but chances are you would be better off with the R5.

It would save you a lot of money, and for most things it would not make a big difference performance wise.

Then don't do it. You need to walk before you can run.

Just start off with regular air coolers and then when you're comfortable with building everything, then you can start thinking about water cooling.

This is assuming that you're talking about open loop cooling by the way. If you're talking about those closed loop systems then you got nothing to be worried about. They are basically as easy to install as a regular air cooler.

Your cooler will come with some thermal paste. No need to buy more.

Why not start off with the fans that already come with the case? More fans will most likely just make your PC noisier without actually helping that much.

850 watts is complete overkill for this computer. It won't even use 500 watts.

I recommend that you focus on getting a good quality power supply rather than one with high wattage.

PSU is one of those things where you can't just look at one number and go "this is good because the number says 850". It is entirely possible that a 650 watt power supply is better than a 850 watt one. Not just in the power they can deliver over a long period of time, but also the quality of power it delivers and the safety.

If your PSU delivers dirty power to your components, or it fails and doesn't have proper safety mechanics, then your other computer parts might die.

so i'm back:

some points to point out:

  • that psu you orignally posted, i wouldn't trust it
  • save on aftermarket fans, especially cheap ones, they are not worth it. Most decent cases come with sufficient cooling configs
  • no need for aftermarket thermal paste, the coolers come with them

This would be my suggestion, save the 100$ for the gpu upgrade afterwards. The 1600X will be enough for gaming. You probably have to contact noctua for the am4 mounting solution, though they should sent it to you for free

LGA 1150 still has some very good processors, an i7 4xxx or Xeon 1231 v3 would still be enough for any GPU on the market without bottlenecking it. add in a better GPU after selling the old one and a good monitor with the remaining money would get you a better gaming experience IMO.

I imagine you would prefer something cheaper, but if you felt like spending the full 1500, you can go pretty balls to the wall and include a GTX 1080ti... FYI - I have no idea about Noctua coolers. Also, you won't need six fans and you can get a 240gb SSD in there.

Here is what I would recommend as the base.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor  ($217.89 @ OutletPC) (Good 6 core processor. The base clock is lower than the 1600X but you might as well just overclock it yourself a bit.)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME X370-PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($158.49 @ SuperBiiz) (Just overall a good motherboard)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($122.89 @ OutletPC) (16GB of fast DDR4 that I made sure is on the list of compatible RAM. I've had issues with RAM compatibility with Ryzen myself, and it's a pain in the ass)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($177.83 @ Amazon) (500GB SSD so that you don't have to think as much about what you should and shouldn't put on it)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 USB3.0 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($52.98 @ Directron) (If you like the looks of the HAF 912 then go for it. It will fit everything listed and it comes with some decent fans so you don't have to buy more)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($88.89 @ OutletPC) (really good PSU for the price. Top notch quality, more than enough wattage and is modular)
Total: $818.97

Things you might want to add or change:

This build only includes the stock cooler. I have no idea how good the stock cooler is so I did not want to include for example a Hyper212 just for you to discover that it performs like the stock cooler. So keep that in mind. You might want to get a Hyper 212 EVO or something similar. Just keep in mind that you will need an extra mounting kit to make it compatible with AM4. That's why I recommend you try the stock cooler first.
