Do I need more than a quad-core for gaming?

I have an Nvidia 1050ti and 8GB of RAM but a (very) outdated Athlon II 445 3.1ghz Triple Core.

I'm looking to upgrade to an FX chip but I don't know whether I will need more than 4 cores for some gaming and possibly some light video production.

Help please?

Then go with a i3 7350K or a G4560. The 7100 isn't really worth it.

You will notice an improvement yes, but the FX series of chips are horribly out dated. You would be better off saving up your money a bit more, to around 400 so you can get a new CPU/Mobo/Ram. Would be a much wiser, and long term investment instead of an old FX chip that will have the same problems you are experiencing right now with your TRI Core chip soon.

to answer your question the only FX cheap worth buying was the 8 core, but they were only worth buying 5 years ago, so dont buy one.

Save up for ryzen or the new Pentiums.

$70 for the mobo

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813144019&cm_re=am4-_-13-144-019-_-Product

$170 for the CPU (this is a 4 core/8 thread R5, the R3's are coming out eventually and are even cheaper)

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113437

8 gigs of DDR4 will probably end up being like $60-70, because DDR4 has jacked up pricing right now.

So we're right around $300 to bring the core of your system totally up to date (assuming you don't need to get a PSU as well, which would tack on another $50).

Other than that, assuming you don't have an OEM motherboard and power supply, you could either take a stab at unlocking your triplecore, or grab a used phenom II for like $50-60, but at that point you're playing with fairly ancient hardware.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

no, you need a new platform to get any improvement. save your money as suggested above.

if you try to replace it might not be compatible with your motherboard even with a BIOS update.

No, you don't need it. But it is definitely nice to have. I got my 8c/16t Xeon for about $50, and an x79 motherboard for less than $200. That gives you many, many cores for sweet multitasking goodness and a good speed boost over your existing CPU, especially with a small overclock.

If you want to go new, check out the Ryzen lineup and grab whatever you can afford over there.

As others have said, don't go with an Fx chip. Only ones worth getting are 8 core. If you do decide to get one, you will need a board that can support it and a good cooler or you'll have plenty of issues.
