Considering how Linus was quiet about this on multiple occasions, I thought he would never make a new video.

I'm glad this has been brought up to the public that so likes to link his old video saying it doesn't matter. It does. Sure, the video could go even deeper, but I'm happy with this.

FINALLY. FOR THE MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, YOU FINALLY INCLUDED MINIMUM FRAMERATES. How long have I been throwing this lightly in the air in order for you to hit it? lol.

 

I will also add for anyone that's reading: I've yet to find a single kit of ram that couldn't hit 3000mhz manually overclocked. The worst of the worst Micron IC's can hit 3000mhz on budget boards, if you are willing to dedicate the time to it. Be warned, it requires a fair bit of masochism in order to want to do this, but it saves you money and is free performance.

EDIT: I should clarify that my aforementioned overclocks were done solely on Skylake/Kaby. Still waiting on Ryzen to fix their weak IMC and to provide users access to tertiary timings.

How could you talk about RAM speeds and not mention CAS latency once? WHAT THE HELL?! #FAIL

 

 

I think you really owe your viewers a follow up video since you only provided half the story and presented it as the entire explanation.

 

EDIT 1: I went and watched your previous video, Honest Answers, and... wow. Talking about how you're going to be more honest in your video titles. The title of this video should be "Does RAM frequency REALLY matter?"

 

I love you guys. You are the reason I got into computers. I watch all your videos and want to see you take over the world. But damn... To post a video saying you'll title your videos more accurately, then to go post a half baked video the very next day... what a shame. You can redeem yourself!

CPU = A10 6800K (@4.3Ghz) / GPU = HD 8670D (@844mhz/ram@1866mhz) - 2016 ≠ Dual Cores - why learn Linux ? - OLD intel x4 cpu (Q6600) + amd HD 7950 - this is what i think on watts x dollar cost - CPU "bottlenecks" only start to show "at the super high end cards" (like the 390) if you have a 4 cores CPU

No. It has always been this way. Their methodology was garbage back then. They never tested minimum framerates, and they tested in ways that made the GPU itself the bottleneck. We've proven beyond a reasonable doubt that memory speed matters when your CPU is I/O bound. This won't happen much, if any, if your GPU is the constant bottleneck.

I think you owe it to yourself to do more research. Cas Latency is nowhere near "half the story". It's not even a 10th. As far as latency goes, it's barely significant if you compare it to the timings that actually matter (RTL/IO-L's). People put far too much faith into the primary timings, but they will only get you so far. I can reduce my latency far more drastically just by touching RTL/IO-L's, tRFC and tREFI without even touching CAS. If you are going to fault Linus for not mentioning timings, you might as well go all out and mention the real timings, not just primary timings.

 

I say he did an okay job. Higher clocked ram, assuming primary timings are not changed much higher than JEDEC, will result in lower latency as a result. When timings remain the same, but frequency improves, the time it takes to complete the clock cycle is shortened. RTL (Round Trip Latency) is tied to both CAS and frequency (technically, it's tied to several other timings as well, but that's a story for another day) and is impacted positively or negatively depending on how they are altered. If you increase clock speeds, but also increase CAS latency, then RTL's will either be the same, or worse. They will not improve. 

 

At the very least, this video should help undo some of their horrible videos of the past, and make my job easier. Perhaps now people will start to see memory overclocking as a valid option for performance. Especially if they enjoy much more consistent minimum framerates.

Awesome video. @LinusTech's results are consistent with what I found in some of the cpu bound games I played when I switched from DDR3-1600 to DDR3-2400. Eg minimal gains on average but pretty significant gains in minimum framerates.

Warning: I'm going to get very, very technical in this...


To say that RAM speed doesn't matter merely because your benchmarks aren't reflecting a difference is a bit simplistic. Generally to understand how memory speed matters, you need to be versed in low-level programming. I'm talking about assembly language here. And unless you were in a college computer science program as recently as 15 years ago, you likely haven't studied it.

 

Your CPU knows only how to talk to memory. The instruction sets don't allow for it to do communicate beyond memory addresses. It doesn't have any capability of talking to your hardware directly. There is no CPU instruction that says "send this information to the graphics card". Instead it all happens via memory addresses and hardware interrupts.

 

As such, RAM plays a much bigger role in your system than you think.

 

RAM isn't just where stuff is stored for the CPU to use. It is basically the "post office" of your computer system. Everything uses RAM. Your sound card, network interface controller, graphics card(s), SATA controller... everything. The UEFI (BIOS) is what coordinates all of this.

 

Faster RAM means a more efficient "post office" in your system, meaning you see a performance gain across the board. Not just in ways benchmarks can readily show. It should be clear my dual-channel and even quad-channel can yield performance benefits.

 

So why then isn't faster RAM reflected in benchmarks, or at least not to the degree one might expect? Quite simply it has to do with code compilers. If you've studied and worked with assembly language, you already know the specifics. I'll do my best to summarize this for everyone else.

 

Your CPU has several temporary "boxes" for storing a few bytes of data called registers. Along with this it also has its various levels of cache. All of this is with the intent of keeping the CPU from pulling from RAM unless absolutely necessary. Because reading from and writing to RAM is expensive for the CPU. Registers and CPU cache are much less expensive places to store stuff temporarily. And the developers who write the compilers know this. So they write the compilers to output executable code that tries to use the registers and cache far more than pulling from RAM where possible. This is largely abstracted away from the software developer, but when assembly language was king, you had to know about it to keep from writing a slow program.

 

And compilers have to generate code for a "common denominator". And this applies just as much to your operating system as it does your games. And this means that optimizations made in newer generations may not yield the performance gains that one might expect.

 

In short, the kind of software that would unequivocally benefit from faster RAM isn't software the general public runs on their systems. Instead it's highly specialized software typically seen in data centers and large computing clusters, where an extra 300MHz in memory can, when spread across a few hundred or a few thousand nodes in a cluster, make a significant difference on the overall performance of the cluster.

 

For most everyone else, faster RAM is just a bragging right. Whether you see a performance boost going with faster RAM is largely dependent upon what you're doing. And for most general applications, you won't notice it. In gaming, since you're talking about a lot of inter-hardware communication, you'll see some gains, but it won't be linear with the MHz difference.

Try benchmarking game Factorio with insane map size and big factory. RAM speed there have almost higher effect than CPU speed! Crazy optimized game.

Any LED illuminated RAM works at the speed of light ( maximum possible speed for anything), it doesn't have to RGB illuminated, but RGB light breathing effects help with cooling.

Exactly. You can also tell when your RAM is getting too hot with RGB since it goes from "breathing mode" to "panting mode"

 

Really helpful feature when overclocking.
