Retro computer subforum

I dont know how popular this would be but id love to see a subforum for older computers. ive really only found one other forum that is active enough to have such a subforum. But here I think the age demographic is varied it enough that it could become a great resource for knowledge of old things.

A lot of older post from the 2000s that are on the likes of anadtech just require too much contextual knowledge for the time period that many, myself included, either dont remember or dont know.

 

Edit: Also that I think any retro related post would get lost the main threads for computing  on modern hardware.

This has been suggested before and declined. There just isn't enough interest. I see maybe one topic a month about retro computers.

IMO its because making such a post would just get lost among all the others. Theres plenty of stuff id love to ask/post but dont do it here because it likely wouldnt get answered before it disappears from page 1.

Same can be said for that Star Citizen sub forum, who even uses that yet its still there after all this time.

So a negative feedback loop? Having a different category won't necessarily make it more popular.

It was a lot more popular when the game was first announced, (2013 era of the forum).

Won't know unless we try. Even if its not used as much the info posted to there likely would be useful to anyone visiting the sit looking for such things.

I think it'd be nice, but I'd have to agree, it might be pretty light in use overall.  Kind of like having Safari browser on a windows system.  Even Opera gets more use.

I would KILL for this! And before anyone else says "just use the existing sub forums". Yeah, no. Try making a post about a voodoo card, then watch it get buried by 10 "480 or 1060" threads. Or a Pentium 2 post, and watch it get buried my millions of "7700k or 1700" threads. It just doesn't work. We NEED a retro sub forum. Also, the "it won't get used much" argument is weak as hell too. We have a mobile gaming section FFS! I've suggested this before too, but everyone just says the same old bullshit. Oh well.

Maybe because they get buried so damn quick. Yeah, the interest is low, but answer me this. Which sub forum makes more sense on a computer forum? Phone gaming or retro computers?

The general consensus has been we already have too many subforums as it is.

It's heavily computer focused. Like, the vast majority of threads are about computers and computer peripherals.

 

Yeah, mobile gaming is more relevant overall, but how about on a computer focused forum? It's different.

How to cheat in Pokemon GO was about mobile game. So thats one video each.

 

At the moment I would hobby electronics and general are best places for retro hardware. As for getting buried, its that or really quiet subforum. Since we won't suddently get even topic per day when subforum is made. So if there would be subforum, it would be coupled with some other marginal topics. Like how Linux and other OS' section is.

We both know that was to cash in on its popularity at the time and no other reason.

 

Nothing wrong with a quiet subforum. We have a few here. At least if the post is there it can be easily be found and responded to.

Yeah, yeah, we all know the mods are gonna shoot this idea down. Don't even need the "definitive answer"... I know this will never become a thing, even though it should because history is a part of everything and is definitely relevant. And besides, we have dumber sub forums that no one uses on here.
