Safari had one didn't it? It definitely had one when I used Macs before 2014.

Maybe, I'm not super familiar with Safari. My bad.

 

Just kinda assumed since in my experience they always seem late on the bus to pick up advanced web tech.

I would appreciate an "acceptable Ad-placement" model for browsers.  The reason so many of us actually use Ad-blockers (and I have since at least the very early 2000s) really just comes down to the fact you have to trust the webpage you're going to. There's little reason to, frankly.  If it's "free" and not being done because someone is doing the job of their own spare time, your views are Value.  It's instinctive to monetize that.

They originally had it built into Windows 8 with the news metro app. It brought articles from different news sources, had a few images and made it into a sidescrolling article with no ads or clutter.

If they implement this feature and proceed to remove adblockers from the "web store" (or whatever it's called), it will be a nice way to push experienced users away from their browser. They are already notorious for removing useful features.

It is a smart move.  Chrome is popular.  Google blocks other advertising companies, but keeps Google Advertisements and ones on their own websites.

Some more info I found on Reddit, but not in this thread.

 

The built-in adblocker will whitelist ads that are deemed "acceptable". What is and isn't acceptable is based on "The Coalition for Better Ads"'s standards.

Seems like fairly conservative rules but this will probably be good enough for most people. I'll still use uBlock and whitelist things myself, but this is definitely a move in the right direction if you ask me.

Well, there is more to the IE story than just "oh your browser has gotten too popular!".

 

Among other things, Microsoft went around and threatened PC makers to revoke their Windows licensing deals if they installed Netscape on the computers they sold. That played a big role in the lawsuit against IE.

You mean like opera has built in unlimited vpn and ad blocker? 

 

if Google only wants acceptable ads then they need to change their ad model not block things.

Ad blocked that doesn't work on YouTube and blocks the ability to install your own ad blocker :P

This makes an incredible amount of sense, this will keep people from installing other adblockers and google will still show ads from google adsense.

Hey even if they only allow google approved ads, I am all in.

 

The reason I will and always will have an adblocker is 90% of malware comes from these adsites that dont regulate or even check the ads. Good for google!

 - Chrome is the most used web browser by considerable margins. Reaching almost 60%!

 - Google will only allow its own advertisement.

 - Most users don't know what ad blockers are, let alone extensions.

 - Websites will have to switch to Google advertisement platform else, have no ad revenue.

 - Google ad platform fully tracks viewers (ignoring Chrome)

 

This will kill websites, and push for aggressive embedded ads, like fake news that acts as sponsors without a trace that it is paid content. Providing false information to readers. When every sites will do stuff like this, there is no "alternative choice".

 

Sites can't even block Chrome users, as viewers will go somewhere else, and not switch to better alternatives.

 I think the fact that third part adblockers such as Adblock Plus are causing a loss in revenue to google is why they might be implementing their own native adblocker, it allows people to browse ad-free without costing google a loss in revenue. So I agree with your reasoning as to what their practice will be if they make a native adblocker.

 

Additionally I for one don't mind text ads in my google searches, they're not distracting or ruthlessly malicious so there is no harm done, if Google does go through with this (and gets it right) then kudos to them, this means I can just install Chrome and not have to install an adblocker in order to avoid ads constantly trying to force me into downloading their software and browser extensions.

My procrastination is the bane of my existence.

I make games and stuff in my spare time.

According to US law, having a monopoly is not illegal. The part that is illegal is gaining that monopoly through unfair means. You're also assuming Google will use this to assert a further monopoly which is a valid thought, but they usually are pretty fair in these types of scenarios.

I didn't say it was illegal. And Google needs to comply to all regulations to all regions were they operate.

That is why Microsoft needs to comply with the EU regulations, for example.

 

I am saying that they are taking advantage of their practically monopoly presence.
