Upgrade From Rx 480 To Rx 580?

I currently have a Rx 480 4GB I was thinking about updating to a Rx 580 8GB.

But I wasnt sure if it was worth it. I might sell my rx 480 to put towards the rx 580.

Is it a worth enough upgrade or should I just stay?

PC Specs:

CPU: i9 10850k

Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z490-A

Ram: 32GB DDR4 4000MHz

GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 3080 GAMING OC 10G 

Case: Cooler Master: MasterCase H500P

Storage: 4TB NVME SSD, 8TB HDD, 500gb SSD

PSU: Corsair AX1600i

Monitor: ACER X34P 34" and LG 34" 34UC88-B Curved LED Monitor (stacked)

That would make even less sense than upgrading a 6700k to the 7700k... the cards are the exact same with nothing but a polishing and oc'ing... this new line up is not meant to be upgrade path but to put up-to-date the offerings for who is shopping new.

Its a refreshed version of the same GPU, barring some minor changes you already have a 580. Getting a 580 when you already have a 480 wouldnt even be a sidegrade, it would be renewing your warranty.

Well with the limited information we have about Vega till now it is likely to be sitting between the 1080 and 1080ti, so if you consider upgrading from the rx480 to the gtx1080ti worth then Vega is probably for you.

You can mess up a card by overclocking but not easily. So go for it as long as the overclock is stable and temperatures are not too hot then us should be fine.

I've heard its pretty hard to kill a card of overclocking as it will just turn off if it doesn't like it.

It is and I agree with DeadEyePsycho, don't bother. If you already have a Polaris card, wait for Vega... The 580 is more for those who are still on older platforms like the 200 and 300 series.

not a very safe route, take careful percussion, this can potentially kill your card, rx580 is a higher binned rx480.

marketing their first run for the rx was cautious. shipping 8GB cards as 4GB, some BIOS flashing of 470 to 480 to 'buy' into the market share. now they have some recovery, they have to make expectations for upgrading, so push the MHz and we get FPS. FPS sells. its already been discovered, they've raised the voltage levels to increase output; which has dodged the 480-series with meek results for overclocking. AIB makers using an 8-pin, some both a 6-pin and 8-pin, when we know, they'll never get close to 300watts on mid-range cards. the VRM/VRAM is suited for it, but 'limitations' putting a boat-anchor on exceeding levels.

 

tldr; like nVidia, get enough power out there they'll buy the FPS. don't come out of the gate WFO, leave something for the next cycle (refresh/rebrand).

hm, ok. do you have any idea of where to find a bios for a rx 580 4gb? Also I heard someone say in another thread that temps weren't good. Do you think my MSI Gaming X cooler could handle it? Thanks!

The Rx580s are simply meant for people that have an older graphics card and looking to upgrade to a more new, budget friendly one. I have a Geforce GTx 960 4gb and am thinking of upgrading, but might wait for the Vega line that's coming out from AMD
