I do know their reasons. 1. Is cost usually (which it was offered for free)

 

2. Privacy concerns ? yeah those can be resolved as well with a multitude of software's available that turn off all the data stealing Microsoft does along with cortana and just about everything makes Windows 10 "safer" than Windows 7

Probably shouldn't respond to this as your comments seem fairly short sighted and trollish, however, there are many reasons why someone may not wish to upgrade or be able to upgrade their OS to Win10.  This could include things like driver support for legacy hardware, software support and compatibility and even things like enterprise licensing issues.

Have you ever considered that some people don't have a choice in what OS they use when using a computer that isn't their own? You have to remember that not everybody on this forum is an adult and a lot of kids have a family computer that they have little control over. Another good example is my work computer, I am forced to use Windows 7 because that is what is required to be installed for the warranty to remain valid since there are no "official" Windows 10 drivers so if I installed Windows 10 on it and then something broke and I tried to get it repaired through our warranty contracts (not with the laptop vendor) they could blame it on a driver issue. Additionally we have a lot of in-house software and scripts that do not work on Windows 8.1 or 10 so upgrading the OS would result in work stoppage until the developers have free cycles to re-write their software. These are just a few reasons you didn't consider but I guarantee there are more that neither of us considered because it's impossible to know everything about every single person in the world.

Add the hardware check in at the kernel level and make the DLL fetch to return from the kernel instead of running the check itself. You wanna bypass it at a kernel level you literally have to tell your OS your running an entirely different CPU and I don't know about you guys but I certainly wouldn't let any user made patch any where near my HAL.

On topic: It still amazes me that people are willing to defend some companies regardless of what they do.

Like in this thread, where it has been found that Microsoft are deliberately making some of their customers' systems unsecure by spending resources to block updates. Say what you want about "progress" and all that, but when a company deliberately harms their paying customers then something is wrong, and it should not be accepted or praised.

This is so bizarre to me. Does this ever happen to any other company, or is it just Microsoft getting this special treatment on this forum?

Cortana is not used to make Windows 10 safer than Windows 7. In fact, there is an argument to be made that Windows 10 is less secure than Windows 7. Not only were far more security holes found for it last year, the huge amount of information gathered is by itself a big security issue.

If I was able to collect a large amount of personal information from your mother's computer wouldn't you think that was an issue?

Could one or more of you please explain to me how I turn off all the telemetry and all the other spyware that is in Windows 10?

 

My criteria:

1) You have to know exactly what you are blocking. None of those "here is a list of 10,000 redirects using the host file" because those are like going fishing with a bazooka. Sure you might get all the spyware blocked, but you might also kill a lot of important things too, and end up breaking a bunch of things.

2) No garbage that has to constantly run in the background and hog resources or add more spyware by itself. I don't want to replace one evil with another, potentially even bigger evil.

3) Free. Since I already paid for my OS I don't want to pay again just to get what I already had on the previous version.

4) Doesn't require several days of research. Since a few of you claimed that this was easy or only required moderate knowledge I think this shouldn't be too hard, right?

 

Bonus) Preferably don't require redoing every single time Microsoft releases an update. I already have a fairly long list of things I need to fix every time I install Windows 10 or upgrade it, and I don't want it growing even larger.

Frankly, Microsoft (nor any other software company) couldn't keep people from constantly breaking their copyright protection systems in its entire history. Probably they didn't even try. I don't see how this much less important "DRM-lookalike" could be sustained any further, other than through hackers' apathy (it was probably harder to break Denuvo, but also more rewarding in terms of attention).

No. Releasing a new product can (doesn't need to, but can) be progress. Nerfing an existing product is not progress by any definition of the term.

 

If Microsoft did any "progress" with Windows 10, it did so by releasing it. Faking advantages it doesn't actually have doesn't constitute any progress.

Releasing Tesla cars may be progress. Having Elon Musk attacking parked gas cars with a baseball bat Michael-Jackson-style to see if more people buy Teslas is not progress. And that wouldn't change if those cars were also made by Tesla instead of someone else.

Microsoft are also open about data is being sent to them they have an article that breaks it all down. I use opera personally free unlimited vpn  

 

I have windows phone too, it noce getting texts on my desktop and being able to reply without needing to stop to look at my phone.

I can do that too on my Android phone  All I need to do is install Cortana, sync it up with Cortana on my desktop and there, I can reply to texts on my desktop.

It's a mix. Windows 10 suffers from it too. When you search something it just won't show up. I never had the problem on 7 and it even found shortcuts. 8.1 was also made heavily for touch devices so the UI is cancer. Outside of that it is meh

Well with OEM and users being idiots and mixing VXD drivers with WDM drivers, of course they hated Windows ME-mixing the 2 driver types is pretty much where all the problems people had come from (lack of Real DOS mode is a non issue I've found out with some of my really, really old MS DOS games-games which date back to MS DOS 2.0 and 64KB of RAM). Kind of like people hating Vista because it reuired more than 512MB of RAM to run smoothly...even though 1GB of RAM was dirt cheap in 2006.

Windows 8/8.1 along with 10 have a well known bug that prevents DX9 games from using more than 4GB of RAM and vRAM. A bug that MS is fully aware of but refuses to fix.

Personally, I use the Spybot one, along with tweaking the OS manually (like disabling automatic updates via GPEdit, so it only alerts me but does not download/install until I specify).  The Spybot Anti-Beacon also doesn't require installation and - while I run it after major updates to ensure there's nothing new that needs fixed - I've yet to see it require full reapplication after an update.

 

I have fiddled with WinAero to disable the stupid login image screen before you can get to the password dialog, but it only works when locking the system.  It has no affect on reboot (something that irks me to no end about Win10).
