RX 480 Cards Can be Flashed to RX 580

User TonybonJoby in [Techpowerup] forums has successfully flashed his XFX RX 480 graphics card with the BIOS from a Sapphire RX 580 Limited Edition (the one that runs at 1411 MHz Boost clocks, yes.) Having obtained the Sapphire's BIOS right here on TPU, he then flashed it onto his graphics card (which possesses a dual-BIOS setup; this is an important point which you should consider, as it gives you an extra safety net should anything go wrong) through ATIFlash. The newly-christened RX 580 thus smiles for the screenshot, with a stock clock of 1411 MHz, higher than most overclocks possible with the RX 480 cards, probably due to increased voltages on the BIOS level. The user then tested the card on The Witcher 3 and Furmark, with no problems having been reported. Just remember to back-up your BIOS with GPU-Z and make sure to peruse our forums for some details on this flashing process before you get the proverbial grease on your elbows.

Well, there is probably no performance increase in doing so (that you couldn't do with a manual overclock), so no really compelling use to doing this... but I guess if you want to buy a RX 580 sticker then BAM it's a whole new card. Anybody with a dual-bios 480 here at LTT going to attempt it?

Not surprised. All it'll do is bump up the reference voltage to 1.2ishV. Should allow higher overclocks on 480s though :P

True, it was only a minor upgrade at best. But now instead of buying the RX5XX for new builds, everyone's just gonna get a 480 for cheap and flash it

True, but i'm saying for people doing new builds it'd make more sense to just get a cheap 480 and flash it.

Seriously? Flash a BIOS that increases voltages and clocks to a point that your card isn't guaranteed to handle? The only reason I'm doing it is because I have a dual BIOS card. If you're doing this to a non-binned chip and on a card with a garbage cooler, good luck.

Exactly. The 480 is dual BIOS. And if you bought a card with a garbage cooler in the first place, that's what makes you dumb, not the flashing your BIOS.

I don't think you know what dual BIOS means. Also, the 480s with good coolers like mine are not cheaper than 580s. So.......what money are you saving exactly instead of buying a 580? You really haven't put much thought into this have you.

It means there's a main BIOS and a backup BIOS... I'm not dumb, I know what dual BIOS is. And no, the 580 has an MSRP of ~$250, while you can get an 8gb XFX RX 480 (which is what the guy from the TPU forums used for the BIOS flash) for about ~$200 (depending on what site you buy it from).

He has an XFX RS cooler which is much worse than the GTR that I have. All he did was flash the BIOS and hasn't done any extensive game testing. He said he was going to so keep and eye out for that. His temps and noise levels are going to go through the roof. Buying a "cheap" 480 with the intention of flashing it onto a 580 is dumb. There's a reason the only 480s that came with the 580-type clocks were the GTR, Nitro, Strix and MSI Gaming. Hell, Sapphire had to make the Nitro 580 cooler bigger to handle those clock speeds.
