External HDD?

xDylanio

What are external hdd mostly used for. Who uses them and why? Im thinking most laptop users use them, but maybe they serve a different purpose.

I'm looking to get one because I've removed the HDD cages from my case to fit a radiator in the front, right now they are on top of eachother in the 5.25 bay drive i think it's called. Anyways they get pretty hot, so I'm thinking of getting a 2tb or so external hdd to keep the case cleaner, any opinions?

CPU - i7-4790k

GPU - MSI 980 Ti

Mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Memory - 32 GB DDR3

Storage - 3.4 TB

So you want to keep your case cleaner, while cluttering up your desk with external crap... That makes sence.

(maybe get a NAS?)

What do you mean? I'm fairly new to this.

Backing something up and leaving the drive in say a closet so you're avoiding potential damage to the drive. The other use for external HDDs is moving stuff between computers that are at different locations.

My father in fact bought a 2TB  external hdd from toshiba for $50 because he plans on getting a mac i really think that with just as much use the  external hdd will get just as hot if not hotter also causing a eye soar if on desk plus extra noise.

i could see a NAS but i think you could just get a big 5TB hdd or bigger and avoid case clutter plus you could store important info on the old hdd's as backups  which then you could remove form your case and leave them alone
