Right, I am talking about FE only running on GPU boost. But most FE cards don't really have the thermal head room outside of that to OC much farther.

Scaling can be a lot better than that.  It all depends on GPU load.  At 4K you can easily see 80-90% scaling.

I don't think it would be 25% for me. I am 198 points behind Kyle's 1080 in Fire Strike extreme. I am also only 30 points away from someone else's 1080FE on the forum in the Ugine superposition benchmark. It certainly beats 1070s and matches 1080FEs. Slap a decent cooler on the 1080 and OC it to 2.2Ghz then you will beat it. But nothing worth spending another $549 on.

But by nature almost all gsync panels are high refresh rate. They only make sense if you are targeting more than 60fps but less than 144, so SLI is stil a very important factor in its value imo, unless you're using things like a 1080 for 1080p

What are you talking about? You don't need 70% scaling to beat a 1080ti with 2 980ti. The only card that beats 2 980ti is a Titan Xp that I have ever seen.

Sure we have to add motherboard and PSU to the costs but at the end of the day that's pretty much it, SLI when done and supported right will give you the power you could only hope to see in the next gen, if you're willing to face a few hassles there simply is no reason why not go for it and I do totally approve what nVidia did by locking SLI for the cards 1070 and above since most complains used to come from people SLI'ing --60 cards and feeling "cheated".

 

Nowadays if you shop right you can totally skip an entire gen, you with a 980ti sli, I with the Titan XM, Pascal was pretty much pointless... I'm still waiting for Volta to upgrade and finally move up to 1440p ultrawide.

This is one of the big reasons why I SLI/CF. In 2009, I was getting GTX 680 levels of performance with my HD5970. In 2014, I was getting GTX 1080 levels of performance with my 2x GTX980. Considering the games I play and the settings I play them at, I don't regret any of my purchases. Hitting 60FPS in RotTR at 4k on High on day 1 was nothing short of amazing.

Gsynx is extremely useful for 4K 60Hz where it can be hard to drive everything at locked 60 FPS.  It makes games running at 40-59 fps feel smoother and is hugely beneficial.
