980 TI SLI vs 1080 TI SLI QHD Benchmarking

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Dear LLT,

I know this topic has been beaten with a dead horse, but hear me out. I truly can't find ANY (not even one) benchmark comparison of two 980 TIs in SLI vs two 1080 TIs in SLI using a 3440x1440 monitor (so not quite 1440P, and not quite 4K).

It would be interesting to know how far SLI is being abandoned as a concept. Two 980 TIs still outperform a single 1080 TI by about 7-9% or so, however, that is not nearly a fair comparison. Anyone have two 1080 TIs in SLI that is willing to share their Witcher 3, GTA 5, and Firestrike benchmarks with me?

Thanks,

Amanwithplan

sli is dead at this point.

just try to find someone who did 2 980ti's in SLI in something like firestrike, then find someone whoi did 2 1080ti's in SLI in firestrike (with same settings/whatever)

i7 3770k @ 1.3v 4.0GHz | 2x8GB CAS9 1600MHz | Radeon VII | ASUS P8Z77-V LE | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

anything over 2 cards is dead but 2 cards are fine, most AAA devs supports 2 card sli and crossfire.

well, i find it to be dead :P

if you're going to be buying 2 1080ti's, why don't you donate one to me? :D

There's nearly a 0% chance I buy two 1080 TIs, but I would like to understand where my 980 TIs stand in the modern computing sphere. Get a feel for it.

i gave up on buying top tier gfx after my disappointment with the gtx480, 1070 sli works flawlessly in all games I play( sadly I am not really a hardcore gamer).

980ti = 1070

2x 980ti = 980ti + 25-40% of another 980ti

so 2x 980ti is ~= 1080

Thanks for finding this, but his results are loopy.

His synthetics on Firestrike are lower than mine and he has a single 1080TI outperforming 980TI SLI in most titles, which simply isn't true, although perhaps it was for him.

Also in his testing he has a single 1080 TI outperforming two 1080 TIs in SLI in many of the gaming benchmarks. Something loopy with his setup, perhaps his mobo or CPU does not have enough lanes to run SLI unbottlenecked? Maybe the new processor isn't tested enough yet for SLI performance. I can't put my finger on it, but I can't go by his results, they are just way too wrong.

Shouldn't be pcie lanes, R7 has 24 meaning running 2 8x pcie 3.0 is no issue for the system.  Meh, I'd say go with 1 1080 or 1080 ti and buy another when they cost basically nothing in a couple of years :P

A high end TI will never cost "basically nothing". A 650 TI is still about $300 and it can't run any modern title at a decent frame rate. There was just too much engineering/development at the time for it to justify ever lowering the price and shops keep their stock for extended warranty purposes.

I believe the 600 GTX series was the first to have high-end TIs, all the TIs before it were low to mid-end.

Replace "980 Ti SLI" with "1070 SLI". You'll find more results and they are pretty much the same thing.

There's no evidence SLI is being abandoned at all, and even if it were using old games like GTA V and The Witcher 3 with well documented SLI support along with synthetic benchmarks would not reveal this.

There are other problems with your testing idea, which is that there is massive disparity between GPU power and CPU power at the moment. OC3D found this (though didn't have the sense to correctly interpret their own data >_>) whereby they found that even on a very good CPU they were only GPU bound by a single 1080 Ti enough to get any benefit from a second one at 4K. If you are going to do any testing at 1440p -- even if it's ultrawide -- use DSR to really make sure the GPU is your limiting factor otherwise you, like TTL, could come to the very wrong conclusion that some games and the driver support SLI entirely at high resolution, but don't support it at low res >_<

I hope that Ryzen and the 6900K see better utilisation soon because it seems to be high performance CPU support that's dying or dead at the moment, not SLI.

No. Just no. 1070 SLI is basically a 1080 Ti equivalent, not 1080.

I have two 1080ti's and a 4k monitor... I could run some benchmarks if you like - if I remember

Witcher 3 is a bit hard to run consistantly. I ran GTA5 on absolute max settings using the inbuilt benchmark last night to do some of my own 16x8x vs 8x8x comparisons.

Im playing Mass effect Andromeda right now, everything maxed out on it and im getting high 90% GPU utilization to acheive 60fps @ 4k... on a single 1080ti I get 35fps... SLI on I get 60... scaling is around +80% performance.

Using 3DMark is a BAD comparison as the scaling is near perfrect... firestrike is even worse as its 1080p and the CPU / PCIe / SLI limits are real

NOTE: 9xx series scale better in SLI than 10xx series - multi-gpu 980ti tend to beat multi-gpu 1070. its just how it is...

If all you want to use your VR headset for is sitting at a desk - then go buy a 3DTV... If you want to look behind you, see a skeleton charging, and then reach to a shelf, grab a throwing axe and hurl it squarely at his pale head and watch as his bony body crumbles at your feet (and not have to vacuum up tiny bone shards afterwards) buy a Vive

-stuff-

How on earth did you manage to get ROTR to only run at 41 fps on two 1080 Tis!? I play with v-sync on to lock to 60 with two 1080s at 4K. Is this Dx11 or 12, because Dx12 AFR works really well in this game in my experience. It will also use your six cores nicely.

Come to think about it I get around 48 fps on a single 1080.

The only settings I have off/turned down are things like motion blur, film grain and vignette (personal preference), and textures are at High because Very High seems to want more than 8GB vram and it introduces some hanging and stuttering (which your 1080 Ti shouldn't have an issue with)

Also proof of locked 60 on 1080s

its on DX11 with EVERYTHING MANUALLY MAXED! its not the "ultra" preset... I am using 4xSSAA, VXAO, very high purehair... ect... dropping the setings and I was able to play it at 4k comfortably on a single 980ti

Im happy to rerun at one of the predefined settings.

as below - VXAO alone has a preety decent perforamnce hit
so does SSAA
so does purehair

Rise of the Tomb Raider - Anti-Aliasing Performance

Wait you have SSAA enabled? So you're running the game at 8K and downsamping to 4K. That alone explains your frame rate, 8K without SLI (because this game only properly supports that in Dx12) is monstrous.

if it weren't 3am and I didn't have work in four hours I'd send the settings, but apart from those I've mentioned (and SSAA because I'm not a lunatic) everything is maxed. I still don't get why people insist on using dx11 in this game with specs like those given the multithread and multi GPU dx12 brings to the table.

Pretty sure the 1080ti beats a 980ti sli setup in almost everything.

I still don't get why people insist on using dx11 in this game with specs like those given the multithread and multi GPU dx12 brings to the table.

yeah I REALLY wanted to stress the system lol. so 41fps average with 4xSSAA on aint shabby :-) im certainly not palying the game at those settings.

Im not suing DX12 as I coudlnt get the frame pacing to behave. I found DX11 was a subjectivley smoother experience.

If you want to look behind you, see a skeleton charging, and then reach to a shelf, grab a throwing axe and hurl it squarely at his pale head and watch as his bony body crumbles at your feet (and not have to vacuum up tiny bone shards afterwards) buy a Vive

Depends on what type of OC you can get. My 980ti matches and beats a 1080FE.

around, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ive just heard it usually is around a 1070 in terms of speed

i guess if you overclock it, it'll match a FE 1080

such claims are very misleading... you may come close until you OC the 1080FE ;-)

or run Timespy...

yeah I REALLY wanted to stress the system lol. so 41fps average with 4xSSAA on aint shabby :-) im certainly not palying the game at those settings.

Im not suing DX12 as I coudlnt get the frame pacing to behave. I found DX11 was a subjectivley smoother experience.

The frame pacing is fine for me at 1080p, it's only at 4K it goes a bit crazy. Capping it with vsync made it smooth for me though. i found dx11 created cpuboytkdcecjs that introduced its own stuttering

edit: ...my phone doesn't seem to like the words "cpu bottleneck"

I also didnt try DX12 with Gsync off... Gsync and SLI can be problematic so ive disabled Gsync for now.
