RX 580 and 570 Review

So the Kaby Lake of GPU's, just a minor improvement, not worth the cost to upgrade.

Hey!

I can return my RX 480 until May 18th. Will there be custom cards around ~250€?

But my R9 390 is the same as a 290 which is the same as that 2009 card, and it performs like a 480 which performs about the same as a 580...

Why is a 2009 graphics card this good?!?!?!?!

The R9 290/x launched in Q4 2013 @ $400/$550. Now, 3.5 years later we get the same performance for 50% of the price.

I think the REAL question is WHY hasn't AMD improved in 8 YEARS.

There will ONLY be custom cards, Reference doesn't exist in the 500 series.

It's AMD's history.

You can check that Linus video about all the AMD graphics card from 10 years back for your answer.

No, Vega is not here yet... but we do have some pretty slick new Polaris cards from AMD. Should you pick one up?

Isn't this a little late? I saw the video way earlier.

You were never supposed to upgrade from a rx480 to the rx580 in the first place, this is just to keep the market offering up-to-day to who's buying new.

They have. The 290 at launch (3.5~ years ago) was around a 780. The 290 today is more like a 970. AMD has improved just as much as Nvidia -- Nvidia is just focusing on the high end to satisfy the server space.

In performance as well. AMD just isn't producing the larger chips that would make them competitive at the high end. The 480 is noticeably smaller than a 290.

Going by the 200/300 series, I'd expect to see a similar clockspeed gain on the 500 series, so Kaby Lake vs. Skylake is just as much as 500 vs. 400.

Size just comes from a Die Shrink, performance per dollar or performance relative to the physical size means NOTHING, RAW PERFORMANCE is what matters and AMD won't have that till they FINALLY launch the long awaited Vega, but if it takes much longer Nvidia might just beat them to the punch with Volta.

Actually it means a lot. AMD could have released a scaled up version of Polaris if they wanted to, but they decided it wasn't worth the expense. That doesn't take away from the fact that AMD's price AND performance have improved over the years.

Now I totally agree with you, I really don't give a shit about power efficiency, I go and tell my Desktop: draw as much power as you need but give me performance.

I don't really get why so many people care this much about the power efficiency, does a couple of dollars more or less on energy bills really matter that much? The really don't to me especially at the cost of performance.

Well, mobile is a big driving force, and ideally you want to get mobile and desktop on the same design. So power consumption does end up being critical. But, the fact that Polaris is more efficient than Hawaii isn't the big takeaway -- it's that Polaris is much smaller and if scaled to Hawaii sizes  and would be much more powerful.

And the same can be said for the 780 -> 970 -> 1060. There has been the same "stagnant" performance there too.

Polaris was NEVER meant to capture/recapture the high end. It is and always has been targeted at mid-range.

Darn I keep forgetting about mobile gaming, a shame really maybe if Desktops weren't chained to the mobile solutions we could actually see an even faster pace on performance increase from these hardwares.

That's a bummer.. This is only my 3rd GPU. I had one in a desktop from years ago that my dad bought so I could play DOW, then I got a 960 used and replaced it about a month later with my 390.

There's SOME (as I hinted at) but it's not as significant as I'd hope.
