You would loose energy through heat until the battery died.

If its a half decent unit, nothing would happen as the internal circuitry would null your actions.

If its a cheap unit, smoke and flames

what makes you think it would burn up?

It's probably be side it's the incorrect use of 'loose'. It should be 'lose' (as in losing energy, instead of 'loose shoelace')

Otherwise this the right answer :)

the output is the same as the input so shouldn't actually trigger anything.

If my understanding is correct, most consumer UPSs just act as a passthrough until the power is interrupted, then they switch to battery. So if you plugged one into itself, unless it had measures in place to prevent it (which I imagine good ones do), it would just keep switching on, sensing a current, switching off, sensing no current, switching on, etc. until it's dead.

For UPSs that don't act as a passthrough, the answers that have already been given are probably all that would happen.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

In a world of perfect energy tansfer through a UPS (no waste heat, or power to things like speakers or LEDs), it would just be a finite amount of electricity looping infinitely. The second you would plug something in, there would be a leak in the loop, and the finite electricity decreases until none is left. It would effectively be a battery.

But there is waste heat, meaning that the battery would discharge by itself over time without an external 'leak'.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

Don't forget that the third prong on an electrical plug is for grounding. The entire metal  case of the UPS and it's components are grounded through that prong. The computer you plug into the UPS is therefore grounded through the unit and out that little prong on the UPS plug. I imagine being how potentially dangerous a UPS is that it would contain a ground fault circuit interrupter. This would detect that the UPS is not properly grounded, (because by plugin it into itself it would close a grounding circuit) instead of going to a big neutral (the earth is a big neutral) it would trip and turn off the device. You might recognize ground fault circuit interrupter as being the same devices that your wall outlets in the bathroom reciprocals used to stop death when you accidentally drop the waffle maker in the bubble.
