Light.co Releases Final Design for $1,699 16 Lens DSLR-Quality Camera

I remember seeing this a couple year back, looks like design is now finalised and it will start to ship to backers in mid-July.

They claims that the mixture of 16 different types of lens (each with a smartphone-like sensor) will be able to produce DSLR quality images.

 

As a photographer myself I feel a little skeptic that the combination of the lenses will produce images worthy of the $1,699 price tag. For reference that would get you a Fujifilm X-T2, a top of the range mirror-less with interchangeable lenses. Then again I guess this is aimed more at the high-end consumer looking for a DSLR-quality point and shoot.

 

From an engineering point of view what they're doing in software is similar to what Apple has done in its dual lens setup or Google's HDR+ in the Pixel. Essentially capturing a load of information then fusing it in software. I'm guessing the tele-photo lenses are for minor detail whilst the wide-angle and fast lenses are for the framing and bokeh.

The Light L16 will retail for $1,699 (a little over $100 per camera, not a bad deal, I suppose) and will beginning shipping on July 14th to those who’ve already preordered. The company is not currently taking any more preorders, but it is expected to start taking more later this year after the first batch ships.

Car manufacturers should start using "SuperCar-like performance, a-la Ferrari Enzo, Buggatti Veyron, etc for their little Fiat Panda, Honda Civic....... when you're stuck in the traffic. They're no worse than SuperCars. Yeah.

 

Really sick of the "DSLR-Quality" BS. If you shoot in good sun light then compress and compress the file, posted on the god damn Facebook. Sure, those photos from overpriced little phones can look half decent.

 

But I guess a card box pin hole camera can do just as good in those situations.

 

Try take your little smart phone to a sport event, or shooting wild birds and animals. Good luck.

 

Oh, I just pay $3000 to hire a photographer to shoot my wedding. Hey, he shows up with a smartphone. Smartphone camera is just as good as DSLR, right? :)

That looks so weird xD. What I like though is the Lytro full focus camera, would be great to have it.

I'm not actually sure, I'd assume they'll throw in every trick they can for a $1.7k device

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
