• The official presentation for the upcoming AMD cards, showcasing specifications and gaming performance numbers of several Polaris based variants, has been leaked.

• The series will be utilizing a refreshed reference cooling system.

  • All cards except the Radeon RX 550 will use dual fan cooling solutions as standard

  • AMD has also updated the power configuration on their cards meaning that these card will offer even higher stable operation under load and will be able to overclock decently.

• All cards will officially launch on April 18th

• German overclocker Roman Hartung has pushed a new Ryzen 5 1600X CPU to 5.9 GHz using:

  • an ASUS Crosshair VI Hero motherboard

  • G.Skill DDR4 memory set to work at DDR4-3000 using CL12 timings

  • a bus speed of 130 MHz and a multiplier of 45.5

  • and liquid nitrogen cooling

• .All cores and threads were enabled

• Healso ran Cinebench, GPU PI and Geekbench. In all these four benchmarks he achieved “global firsts” overtaking all Intel hexacore processors.

• Intel is rumoured to be making a Kaby Lake-G series chip designed as a multi-chip module in a singular package.

• The company has already played with such a design before with its Clarkdale family of processors

• This heterogeneous, modular approach to CPU development, allows Intel to:

  • integrate external graphics solutions that could be produced in other factories and then fitted onto the package;

  • It would allow Intel to save die space on their 10 nm dies for actual cores, increasing yields from their 10 nm process;

  • and would allow Intel to recycle old processes with new logic inside the CPU package, permitting the company to better distribute production load across different processes, better utilizing (and extracting value from) their not-so-state-of-the-art processes.

• Phil Schiller said Apple wants “to architect it so that we can keep it fresh with regular improvements”, creating “a Mac Pro modular system”

• the United States Air Force has developed an F-16 drone that can not only fly autonomously, it can also engage in battle with intelligent strategies that it conceives on its own.

• The Air Force had already been using F-16 drones as practice targets for the F-35 to destroy in training. Now the Air Force has announced fully autonomous air-to-air and ground strike capabilities that it developed in conjunction with Lockheed Martin's Skunkworks.

• During a demonstration, an experimental unmanned F-16 aircraft showed how it can react to a dynamic threat environment during an air-to-ground strike mission:

  • It planned and executed the mission on its own, deciding the best route and strategies based on mission priorities and available assets.

  • The aircraft was also able to react to changing threats and adjust its course of action accordingly.

• the unsupervised inmates later hid the PCs in the ceiling of a training room.

• Uber placed fake Lyft rider accounts around cities in order to map the distribution of Lyft drivers, as each RIDER can see up to 8 nearby drivers.

• Monitoring the Lyft driver’s habits, Uber noticed some drivers were “double-apping”: driving for Lyft and Uber

• Uber then sent more rides and offered incentives to these drivers to keep them too busy to drive for Lyft.

• The program was discontinued after Uber paid tens of millions per week in bonuses

• Too bad they didn’t do “Hey Siri”

• Nintendo has announced that it will cease production of the 30-game NES Classic Edition by the end of the month,

• even though it sold 1.5 million units from Nov 11 launch to new years. (Wii-U sold 14m units in its lifetime)

• A representative said that the NES Classic "wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans."

• The NES Classic controller will also be discontinued

American colleges to offer scholarships to play video games

• Apple is developing a sensor that can monitor a person's blood sugar levels continuously and non-invasively.

• If successful, the technology will be integrated into a future version of the Apple Watch to help people with diabetes manage their condition

• Right now, the only effective way to continuously monitor someone's blood glucose level is by inserting a sensor below the skin.

• It's believed that the company is already running trials of the sensors at "clinical sites" in San Francisco's Bay Area.

• Researchers have been able to guess 4-digit pin codes with high accuracy by analysing the data from your phone’s rotation sensors, gyroscopes, and accelerometers.

• Using data collected by mobile device’s hardware tracking systems, the team was able to crack four digit PINs with 70-percent accuracy on the first try, with 100-percent accuracy by the fifth try.

• Unlike you camera and GPS, mobile apps and websites don't need to ask permission to access information from these sensors.

• A site accessed with malicious code via your mobile browser can activate sensor-based monitoring in the background when browser tabs are left open

• Microsoft is enlisting 3rd parties like ACER, Dell, and HP to make mixed reality headsets that are cheaper and more affordable than the Hololens.

• Products costing roughly $300 will be arriving this year

• Microsoft is targeting a middle ground between mobile VR and high systems like the Rift and Vive.

• A Windows 10 update in the fall will let affordable PCs with integrated graphics power these new mixed reality headsets.

• Like HoloLens, this new crop of mixed reality headsets will let you access just about every app and tool you'd otherwise use in Windows 10.

yo linus, Hyper-V and vmware you can totally crossfire in your vm's just not between them, not sure about sli, never had enough nvidia cards, but I've done 2 and 3 way crossfire cards in vm's, and on one day I was being silly I was thinking "crossfire my crossfires? that'd be like raid 0 crossfire" but I couldn't multibox the vm's inside each other in such a way to get anything remotely like that to work, though I did get them sharing workloads and communicating, the resulting performance comparison was at enough of a loss though I didn't feel like pursuing it, but it was a fun thought experiment

Decided to go and re-watch that SLI-Crossfire video, forgot how strange that computer was. Amazing the difference in video and audio quality, though the kitchen is still the best.

You were talking about phase changing and LN2 cooling : There's a thing that combines both aspects without being consumable or loud, it's called Peltier cooling. The temperatures gradients aren't as big as phase changing or liquid cooling and it requires electricity, but you can reach subzero temperatures with a stock amd cooler. You might want to give it a try using liquid cooling.

You can cascade peltier devices too, and they are much smaller.

Their i7-4960X systems equipped with GeForce GTX Titan X's (look in my signature please) are still damn strong for what they're doing.

 

Like other production companies, they can't afford to upgrade every 18 months when something new comes out, or they're just straight up not interested in upgrading at all for the next 5-7 years simply because the computers are powerful enough for what they're doing.

I was late to the show, watched it on Twitch, and honestly I could care less what Linus upgrades them to. It's his machines he's upgrading his video editors after all.

 

Plus AMD doesn't have any deca-core (10-core) CPUs to compete with the i7-6950X anyways, however financially unjustifiable those 10-core CPUs are.

true , its his money

it just would make a nice oppertunity to see if ryzen is worth it in the long term , shure intel has a 10 core , but they cost OVER 3.5* times as much as a R7 1800x , and almost TEN times as much as the R5 1500 

how high is the extra performance he gets from it ? maybe 15% faster rendering , but is that worth it ? would have been nice to find out in a long term series of videos , comparing a 6950x WS w/ a  R7 1800x WS over the term of a year

Don't know much. He has an export server with an i7-6950X which all the final renders and encode passes get offloaded to so that the machines don't have to do all that and the video editors can immediately jump to the next project that needs work. It would have been nice to see some Ryzen workstations though, especially given that @JayzTwoCents used his Ryzen watercooled build for 31 days (supposed to be 30 days, but whatever), and has stated that Ryzen is perfectly viable for a workstation use case, and felt that Ryzen didn't hamper his workflow at all. However I do recognize that it's Linus' money and decision ultimately, and we can't change it.

 

If there's anything to go by, if I were in Linus' shoes, I would have gone with something like this (note that there are some parts re-used from their current builds and are close approximations)

I wonder if unRAID will support a hackintosh if you were to use Apple hardware? The MSP I used to work for sells hosted VM's/VDI and we were going to sell hosted MAC VM's because VMWare support virtualised MAC's ONLY if it's hosted on Apple hardware. VMWare will allow you to run a dedicated physical GPU for a VM, though I've never tried a consumer GPU on a VDI, I mostly only get to work with Teradici PCoIP GPU's.

 

On a side node, there is a company called Sonnet who sell a 4U rackmount kit that can hold two of the "trashcan" mac pro's.
