New KoTOR NOT in Development

One of the few real journalists in gaming, Jason Schreier, looked into the recent KoTOR rumors and turns out it wasn't entirely real.

 

The article talks about how rumors of a new Knights of the Old Repulic RPG always come and go over the years and how this one looks to be a similar case.

The rumors originated from Liam Robertson, who helps operate the channel Unseen64 and said on a podcast last week that he’d heard BioWare’s Austin-based studio was making a new version of the classic Star Wars RPG. As transcribed by a Star Wars fan site, Robertson said: “I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future. What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic. I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now.”

The writer of the article reached out to Robertson who said;

Let me clarify that I don’t think KOTOR’s a current project.

 

How does one mishear something as big as a major franchise coming back soon? My body was ready when the news first started...now I don't know what to do with this.

I would have been very surprised.

 

I assume that the new RPG BioWare is making will be in one of the existing Movie Era's. Either Clone Wars/Rebellion Era, or Post-Empire Era.

 

I also assume you'll be a Jedi. They could go the route where you can choose a different "class", but I would prefer if they do it KOTOR/KOTOR II style where you can choose a tech or other type of class but still be a Jedi.

 

It would be interesting to do an RPG w/ no Jedi though, or at least where Jedi is only one option. The main problem with the latter is balance. This was a huge problem with SW: Galaxies, once they did the Combat 2.0 update. Jedi were everywhere (which made no sense in Canon), and were able to be killed by Imperial Commanders and Storm Troopers, etc. They were too weak.

 

The problem with mixing Jedi and Non Jedi is you either make the Jedi too weak, or you make the non-Jedi classes way too overpowered. I think either Jedi or Non-Jedi is the best route.

Your post made me think of how jedis are so damn op in star wars battlefront (this isn't a rpg, but man do I hate this game mechanic in that game because it makes sense they might be overpowered)

Well that's the problem with having a game where players can be both a Jedi as well as a regular person.

 

Even with top of their game human soldiers, an even average Jedi would be far more powerful.

You can't (or shouldn't) a lightsaber, but there are in-Canon materials that can be used to construct lightsaber resistant armour.

I don't think so. Bioware normally handles Kotor. Battlefront is Dice. He said he misheard/spoke so maybe.

Don't think you know what toxic means, if anything your reply is "fucking toxic". Name gaming journalists besides him that actually do research, cites sources, and follows ethics. The majority just copy+paste whatever the first person to report a topic says and their unbiased reporting oozes bias and personal opinions. Granted, it isn't exclusive to gaming, but it is most noticeable in that industry. As for me, posting on a forum where I'm allow to express my opinion and where I'm not representing a major news company, I'll stick with my original comment. There are few real journalists in gaming.

 

And since you took the mature route by adding "I stopped reading there", I'll do the same thing. Don't bother replying unless it deals with the actual topic of Knights of the Old Republic. You can, I'll just ignore it.

that would probably be 2 years work, I would rather they work on original content rather than remasters. Although KOTOR is probably my favourite game ever.

While I do want original works, I would love a KOTOR1 + KOTOR 2 (plus Sith Lords community expansion/patch integrated into the game) + KOTOR 2 end-story finished, all in a remastered package.

 

I'd pay $60 for that, or maybe $40 each.

SWTOR did it fairly well and while it might be an MMORPG, at this stage it's a very enjoyable single player RPG as well if you only do the story.

I won't bother. I have no time to spend grinding for hours and hours on an MMO that tries to be a Single Player game. I can read a synopsis if I want to know the SWTOR story.

 

I'm also not too happy about how they ended Revan's storyline.

 

The Revan SWTOR novel was decent, but I prefer his character depiction in KOTOR and KOTOR 2 more.

Eh, they pretty much got rid of the grind about 2 years ago. These days you don't even really need to do sidequests to keep the story going.

On the topic at hand, was anyone actually surprised that it's not what everyone hoped it was? Considering the MMO didn't fair too well. Managed expectations people, managed expectations.

That's like saying that calling out the MSM on their bias is toxic. Games journalism has become corrupt in lots of ways, and it's nice to see someone who isn't.

 

 

OT: Dang, I was pretty excited for this.  There hasn't been a good Star Wars game, Imho, in quite a few years, and I was hopeful for this one.
