AMD acquihires Nitero, makers of 60GHz wieless chips for VR & AR

There have been many acquisitions in the VR & AR space in the last year or so, but none of them could be less expected than the one AMD completed today. They have acquired all of Nitero's IP and have acquihired all of they're employees, who now work for AMD. CEO and co-founder of Nitero, Pat Kelly has joined as corporate vice president of AMD's Wireless IP division. On a side note, this is the same Nitero that Valve invest a significant amount in sometime last year.

 

I'm happy to see AMD having the confidence to start rehiring and accuiring new companies now, breaking the companies anemic stance to hiring new talent. If anyone has any ideas as to whether some of this technologies capability can be incorporated in to their GPUs at a hardware or software level then I'd like to hear them.

Not sure if it's the right time for the company to do that ahead of lower-end Ryzen CPUs launch and more importantly - Vega's launch but it's a good sign nonetheless in my opinion.

I think they could release it like Intel/Ryzen chips, where there is a low end one (i3/r3) mid (i5/r5) and high (i7/r7) or atleast 2 tiers where the higher end one is wireless.

I don't get 60ghz wireless. It can hardly go through tissue paper. Isn't an optical wireless connection better at that point anyways?

the speed is far greater, and for a wireless VR solution it would be in line of sight so obstructions is not a issue

60Ghz can go through plastics and does not have to be directional. light also does not reflect well.

you are right light is faster but if light is not using a optical cable it is not reliable to use.

ya going wireless sound great until its a 30 min run time or really heavy. I kind wounder why no one has made a ceiling anchor for the wires with a nice swivel designed in it so you can move freely and spin as much as is needed, like those DIY car wash places.

Yeah, could be an easy fix. I do wonder if a large battery bank in your pocket, can't provide more than 30 min without too much weight. I honestly don't really care that much though. VR is way too expensive to be interesting for me atm. And the simulation sickness means it's very limited in game genres.

Why would their upcoming launches matter?  If anything, it keeps people thinking about AMD, and by extension their upcoming products. Also, it makes sense to spend money while you have it, knowing that you will get more very soon.

Wasn't AMD partnered with an AR company? They released a headset last year, I believe, but it wasn't that good.

To be fair AMD's financial stability depends on how well Ryzen and Vega sell, those two flop = AMD flops. Though AMD has gathered quite substantial cash reserves as of recent time so it might not be that bad. At least this is what I meant.

Thing is AMD passed the critical period. We are no longer worried that they are going to close down. They have been steadily getting closer to breaking even and all that was without Ryzen and Vega. This year they will making a profit for sure.

 

And we already have seen enough to know that Ryzen is anything but a flop.

Vega is still a question mark, let's see...

Agreed, even if Naples only catches a small segment, say 10% of the market, that's an extra $1Bn in cash fo them
