Ebay Bidding Trolls? [LTT Blue iPhone]

iamdarkyoshi

So I'm watching the linus tech tips iphone bidding...

At the time of posting, its at $70,100 USD.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/152502323106

How the hell could anyone spend that much on a phone? I know its the blue package, but still, 70k will buy you a pretty damn nice car...

So are these bids being posted from trolls that won't actually pay for it, letting it go to the next bidder?

Pretty much, yah. If you click on the Bids then you'll see that almost all of them have been made by people with less than 10 feedbacks so almost definitely trolls at this point.

Maybe someone is feeling extremely charitable, but I assume they'll just retract their bid at the end of the auction and it will actually sell for much, much less.

Not surprising since Linus' audience is probably like 15 years old on average.

Does you mum know you're here?

Excuse me but they are not "Trolls" but multiple account holders used to scam the system to make a seller look better then they really are, or just to get more buyers on the sellers "Good" account. The seller and all his internet buddy ebay sellers get in on the action.

The seller has 0 sales and 0 ratings so obviously its a silly stupid joke. ebay should actually ban the ip address and close the sellers account. Or at a minimum look into who bid on the item.

Also no doubt that image is copyrighted, or does Linus not do that?

While eBay's procedures will root out the 'fake' bids after the fact, that doesn't solve the real problem.  The highest 'serious bidder' will win, but since the fake bids are now up to $70.1k, there can be no bidding war at a realistic price between serious bidders. Any new 'serious bid' must now exceed 70.1k.  So that sucks for the charity.

I wonder if eBay has policies for removing 'troll bids' prior to completion of an auction.

I buy and sell on eBay quite a bit.

Not sure if they have a policy per say, but I know they don't do anything about it unless contacted. (meaning that the auction will end normally and if the buyer doesn't pay, the account holder will be WARNED or possibly banned if it's a repeat offense)

No. Would require too much manpower. I don't even think that eBay tracks the IP address.

Had PLENTY of people that changed their minds after winning, or claimed something in the same vein. "my kid hijacked my eBay account."

Only thing you can do is a second chance offer, or relist.

Hell, it's pretty easy to bid on your own items with another account. It's called shill bidding.

He's doing it for the giggles.

Worse that can happen is an "unpaid item" notice on his account, IF the seller follows through.

If you have more than 2 you can be blocked by sellers, but it's a manual process.

ebay states that you enter a contract when you bid.. you can always sue if they do not pay.

have fun explaining to you parents that you have to owe up 70 000 USD ...

I doubt that will happen but would be cool to see happen..

This Truly hurts the LTT Community, people need to take this thing seriously and only bid what your willing to pay,

i doubt they will ever do a charity bid for a item again simply because some trolls ruined it....GOOD JOB

Not quite that kind of contract.

They will be contacted by eBay requesting a payment. If they don't, they will receive an unpaid item case on their account (that part of the contract) and you as the seller receive your money back for listing and final selling value fee.

Seriously wouldn't be worth it. The amount of legal fees, time, just to prove a point
