Python or C for Raspberry PI 3?

Hi, I am now considering to buy a Raspberry PI 3 and I heard that Python or C is widely used on it. I have good experience in C# and C++ but python seems to have better IDE and easier to learn. Which one would you choose?

The designers of Raspberry Pi leaned more to work with Python out of the box and most of the tutorial projects as far as I know are in Python. So from an ease of hitting the ground running, go with Python. Not to mention if you want to do some prototyping, you can do it from the Python console.

 

C will also work and will have the best performance if that matters, but you will have more to setup to get a project up and running. And while I'm sure there are libraries for RasPi I/O, I'm not aware of any off the top of my head to be useful here.

Keep in mind the majority of the python libraries aimed at the pi are just wrapping C libraries (python bindings). You could use both. I personally don't see the benefit in using C for the majority of the basic stuff you can do with the pi (e.g. GPIO - unless you manually wanna learn about how memory mapped I/O works).

 

I'd always lean towards C since I dislike Python and see no benefit in using it.

When I did it, it involved mmapping /dev/mem and performing basic bitwise operations at offsets. I also did it in ARM assembly the exact same way.

Write in C. Python is only relevant if you aim at writing web applications on the RPi (and even then I'd probably choose Lisp instead).

As everyone else has said, it depends on what you want to do. The Raspberry Pi ships with Python GPIO support out of the box (or with an apt-package, I can't remember), but it's equally easy to install wiringPi and use the arduino-style interface.

Thanks, I was thinking to go with python because C has terrible IDE( or no IDE just compiler), I was trying to compile Hello world program on my PC for one week and still having issues. And yes I don't want to do any advanced programs...

That all depends on what you want to program.
If you care about really tight performance and low level programming, C is the clear winner.
If you just wanna get cool stuff to work, python is a great language to use.

Also, you mentioned you know C++ and C#, why not just use those languages instead? Since the raspberry pi runs Linux, you can use whatever language you want (well maybe not visual basic, but you get the point).

Use ARMv8 Assembly and C to make whatever you want without an OS :D

 

On a serious note, it really doesn't matter and you really shouldn't be basing the language you'll be using on how good the IDE is :P
