Topics Show Wrong Author When Looking At Newest Topic from a Sub-Forum

It's been an issue for a long time, and I only just bothered to post it.

 

Whenever you look at a sub-forum from the main page, on the left side it shows the post that was last active in that subforum. Righ tunfer there I assume it's supposed to show the author, since it says "by -username-". However, it doesn't show the original poster of the topic but rather the name of the person that last replied in there.

 

Currently on mobile so I'm too lazy to show screenshots of what I mean. If they're needed I can provide them in a few hours.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Yes, I mentioned that as well, however it can seem confusing because it says "By:" rather than say "Last Poster:". That is what OP is trying to say.

Yeah I get that. If you go to any subforum, the part on the right always shows the latest post. That format carries over to the main forum page.

Thats how forums have showed last post pretty long time. Difference between here and Tom's Hardware for example is that we don't have column names. Just values. So its not really issue by that. Just about how you read/see things. For me its been obvious from the start as its how old phpBB forums used to show it.

Actually checked support forums for "competition" aka vBulletin and phpBB (this forum runs on IPB4). Both have it as Latest Activity/Last Post. In which both give last posters name, rather than last topic created by. So this has been way forum software's work since, idk, mid-2000s.

It says "by", but if you look it actually just displays the name of the last person who commented on the topic. By generally refers to the author or OP, which is misleading in this.
