StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen attributed the "breakthrough" to not only the growth of smartphones worldwide, which give more people access to the internet, but also a decline in sales of traditional PCs.

A Microsoft representative declined to comment specifically on Android taking over Windows, but added: "We are pleased that there are more than 400 million monthly active devices running Windows 10, and most importantly, that Windows 10 has the highest levels of product satisfaction over any previous version of Windows."* (emphasis is mine)

But nonetheless this doesn't surprise me at all. You can buy an Android phone for as low as $50 nowadays and get connected to the internet via wifi or cellular data whereas a Windows PC costs more. But it should be kept in mind that the stats only includes internet connected devices, not the ones that are used offline like cashiers or at kiosks. OS X seems to be in a plateau and iOS is growing but slowly and not on the same pace as Android. The comparison is apples to oranges in my opinion but it won't surprise me if in tue next few years people especially not the enthusiast section will buy computers running Android instead of Windows especially if Google plans to merge Chrome OS and Android.
