Temporal Snow -Ryzen Refresh - Complete 15/07/17

Hi guys, earlier this year I transferred my old build into an IN WIN 303 from a Thermaltake Core X9, due to size constraints and it's impact on desk choices. At the time I re-used my 4790k, Asus Z97 Ranger, Hyper X DDR3 Ram and added a Palit 1080 GTX Gamerock Premium, a 5" TFT screen for temp monitoring and a Crucial MX525gb SSD, before finishing it off with a Corsair K65 RGB Lux.

So here's the plan:

Today I ordered

Ryzen 1700

Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 5 Motherboard

16gb 3200 Trident Z RGB (CAS 16 - I aint paying + 33% for CAS 14!!)

2 Litres Mayhems Pastel Blue

A New Temporal Snow label

Blue and silver sleeving and PINs

20 x 3mm Blue LED (to replaced the Red LED's in the current Thermaltake Riing 12 fans)

Heres what it currently looks like (ish, I'm flushing the red out of the loop!)

A5NlECY.jpg

i1CfIXn.jpg

So, as you may have guessed, I'm moving this from a red and white theme to a blue and white them. It was only ever the RoG board that had me move down this route, my preferred build colours have always been blue on white and purple + green on black.

The first thing I'm going to do is post some benchmark results (which has also been requested - @ericchaipc) from my rig as it currently is as basis to show against the new system once it's complete. I expect some trading blows and am not really doing this from a gaming perspective, more of a platform update perspective, aka my m.2 drive sits around 780mb/s as the boards m.2 is PCIE 2.0 x2, I will also gain USB 3.1 and 4 extra cores!!

So here goes 4790k @ 4.7ghz and Stock 1080 GTX (around 2050mhz on my card)

Firestrike

18129

23607 Physics - 13073 Graphics

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/12141523

The rest are ran @ 4.6Ghz and ram at 2.1ghz with the 1080GTX again at 2050mhz (I'm not overclocking the CPU as it is 20 hours away from selling on Ebay and I know how my luck is!!!) and are all ran at 1440P - Yes I know that the CPU's real strength is shown at 1080P, but as I own a 1440P panel, that is where my concern lays.

Amazing I have deleted every game I own with a benchmark utility, all except Gear of War 4 and GTA V xD - so the benchies will roll in slowly through out the evening at they re-download

no unfortunately, but as I said, a jump from £153 to £207 for the same speed ram on Samsung dies, ill take the hit and run 2933mhz until the bios matures - although I have seen the CAS 16 RGB's running on that board (why I bought it)

Wow long day, board and CPU turned up today and that was a problem in itself as the adapter kit from EK didn't provide any instructions or rubber matting, had to watch a tonne of build logs to make sure I got it right.

Then I had to change 2 tubes in my loop one due the unavailability of VRM/mosfet blocks, and wow did I have problems tonight doing a piece with 2 bends, i mean, i didn't have this many problems the first time I ever did rigid, i went through 3 whole tubes trying to do it and the very last piece I had left it came together, I had all kinds of issues, bubbling in the tube surface, kinks appearing, hardening way too fast, never had issues like this before, certainly not as persistent, I think something must have happened to the tubes or I had too much soapy water causing hot spots - I was pretty angry to say the least!

So at the moment the board, chip and block are fitted and the loop is finished. The crimping tool I had is absolute trash, so I'm waiting on my order to arrive so I can sleeve and pin all my PSU extensions to white, blue and grey. I'm also waiting on my Mayhems baby blue pastel coolant and Trident Z RGB ram, but I don't think I'm even going to get this thing powered up until after the weekend

Ok so I'm and and running, final build pictures will be in a few days, had a few teething issues that involved me reseating the CPU. I still need to sleeve the PCIE cables, but everything bled and running.

I seem to have lucked in on my R7 1700, currently sat at 4ghz @ 1.35V - reading on line a lot of people are needing 1.40v - 1.45v to get to 4ghz, so that's a result - however as my ram is still not on the QVL list for the gigabyte board, I haven't yet managed to get it run above 2400mhz (3200mhz ram)

So I reran the benchmarks - remember my ram is down at 2400mhz and ram speed really affects Ryzens CPU/gaming performance.

The ram running at 2400mhz is really hurting, but ive literally had 45 mins in bios to get it set up, I need to have a read around and see what fixes are in place at the moment, there will be significant improvement if I can get this ram running 3000mhz or even 3200/3400mhz.

Great job man.  The rig looks fantastic!

Hey thanks!

I will work out these photos as the pictures aren't actually anything like the real life...

Just split the SSD apart, removed the label and sprayed it white to match the rig, got a label shipping out to me, will add photos once its finished

Thermaltake messaged me today also, they're shipping out the blue pads free of charge, top customer services there!

New bios update today, allowed me to hit 2666mhz on the ram, but initial efforts (haven't spent a tonne of time) seem to make me unstable at 4ghz at < 1.4v

@ericchaipc that +533mhz on the ram pushed my RotTR up from 88.8 FPS to 92.4FPS with the processor clocked -200mhz. I will do more testing tomorrow and see if I can get stable 4ghz and 2666mhz ram and test more games

Ok I received the new fan pads from Thermaltake this morning, they sent them free of charge :)

Some people thought they maybe too dark for the theme but they're pretty much perfect!

  • 2 weeks later...

Bit of an update, I added another 120mm radiator to the rear to keep temps down a little and because the fan looked terrible. I reseated the ram and weirdly I can now do 2966mhz. So I ran another RotTR benchmark and there's an improvement again, ill run more benchmarks tomorrow and add photos
