AMD adds 8k support to RX480

Chrizt4adam

AMD Radeon Software Crimson 17.4.1
Time to get on those Dell 8k monitors Linus:
"On the video interface front, AMD has finally formally enabled DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 support. The Polaris hardware has been able to support this feature since the start, however as displays are still catching up, AMD is only now finally enabling it. This opens display possibilities requiring much more bandwidth, and listed on the release notes are 8K 30Hz on a single cable and 8K 60Hz on two cables. 8K monitors are slim pickings right now but it’s great for video card vendors to be prepared."

just because it supports a resolution does not mean you have to use it for gaming. a RX480 would be uses full to have 3 8k screens to look a spreadsheets or other work related tasks.

8K 30hz on a single cable? 30 FPS @ 8K on an RX480 is optimistic to say the least, 3 FPS is probably closer to the truth.

you don't think a RX480 can display 8k Microsoft office at 30 fps?

Last time I checked you don't measure fps when running office though.

Sure, still. You would buy a 8k screen and a RX480 for it? Seems kinda off to me. I understand that work related stuff is kinda big... But 8k? Oh give ma a break.

well ya why do it. a 8k30hz output on a RX480 is easily possible to do on standard desktop task. it never claimed to do 8k for gaming.

AMD did this so Linus would have viewers to watch his vids in 8k.  He has to justify his 8k camera purchase, AMD is helping.

And you would pair 8k screen with rx480. Seems legit to me.

My whole point was that it's a funny feature for rx480. That's all.

their are us cases but the point is that they enabled DP1.4 and thats what the standard can do. you could also do 8 1080p screens at 60hz with 1 DP1.4 output.

It's useful to have. Glad AMD supported it.

Forget about gaming and video playback. There is always somebody doing some sort of productivity working on a massive monitor who appreciates the ability to have loads of stuff open and view a massive amount of information at once.

Why would you jump to a conclusion that GPU is for gaming only... This feature they are adding, I agree is extreme, but it's for free and pro content creators will love this.

Yeah I can see a use case for being able to edit footage with a high resolution preview and still having screen real estate for your timeline, tools, etc.

Yep... the same reason a Radeon HD 7850 (5 year old midrange GPU) supports 4K resolution.

Not for gaming, but so that you can connect it to any monitor hassle free and go about your work...

Hey, It's a better deal than the other gpus that can support 8k (Nvidia P4/5/6000 which cost many thousands of dollars)
