The Android Networked Cross-License, which we call "PAX" for short, is a royalty-free community patent cross-license that covers Android and Google Applications preinstalled on devices that meet Android’s compatibility requirements. We call it a community license because all members grant licenses to one another on a royalty-free basis, thereby promoting patent peace within the Android ecosystem. By joining, you will receive broad, long-term freedom of action with respect to Android and Google Applications from all other members. We believe this materially reduces patent risk. And best yet, it’s free to join and open to anyone.

We are delighted to launch PAX with 9 members: Google, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, HTC, Foxconn Technology Group, Coolpad, BQ, HMD Global, and Allview. In total, these companies own more than 230,000 patents worldwide. We encourage other companies, large and small, to consider the PAX License. In short, with respect to Android and Google Applications, this license stands for patent peace between the signatories.

maybe this will also put an end to the Android market fragmentation!? who knows ... wishful thinking

I wonder if this will extend to hardware at all. The  finger print sensor in my xperia x compact is disabled because HP owns the patent in the USA for having the sensor on the side of the phone.

That was my reaction as well... And if i flash the UK firmware then it will work just fine. So the hardware is there. Just disabled because of patents...

Probably not your fault but its still showing as dark gray on night theme.

Also I don't understand what this PAX is accomplishing. Is it talking about all the phone patents like sensors, iris scanners, etc. all the stuff they come up with? If so then all the companies will get free access to use other technology, not sure why the big guys would sign this. If it's something else can someone explain?

Then Google realizes that companies in the tech field rely on proprietary IP in order to attract investors...

if they battle each other in courts of patents they're losing money anyways - the only winners are the lawyers

it also drives the prices down since they won't have to pay cross licence fees to each other - one has a good screen, the others have good finger print scanner / camera ...

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
