You know what his solution was to stop the fans from being so loud? (Btw the fans were set to max speed in bios) He wanted the replace the entire computer to fix it. He's supposed to know this shit. Like really. And apparently he's supposed to be an expert. He tried to use f2 to boot up the bios on a Dell pc. You know, the company that has been supplying us with pcs for the last 12 years?

At least SOMETHING is being done. The company I work for solution is "clear cache and cookies"..not even joking. The computers here are a joke that have issues daily.

 

A typical shift consists of doing so at least 4-5 times a day.

just gonna throw this out there, my dell laptop from 2010 uses f2 to get into the bios.

Now they might, but not always. A LOT of Dell systems (including the very common optiplex 760/780/990s) used F2. It's hard to break habits. Even modern T1700s are F2 iirc.

You shouldn't make such assumption.

 

For example, his department may have a budget set at the beginning of the year for upgrading older hardware, and your pc was old enough to justify being upgraded and a broken fan is a good enough reason to justify the upgrade "on paper", the broken fan is just an excuse to use the budget otherwise his department may not get the same budget next year.

 

Or, maybe he already has computers prepared and it's just a question of cloning the hard drive (if that) which is fairly automated so it would easier for him to just give you a fresh computer and then work on the old computer when there's some downtime.

Maybe he didn't have replacement fans "in stock" or his department isn't reimbursed for fans .

I can understand re-imaging the system itself because no regular user should ever be allowed the permissions necessary to install programs on a managed system. If they managed to install a program, god knows what else has been done so better safe than sorry. Re-imaging doesn't take a system too long out of service. But all systems within a 10-mile radius...  yea that's a bit much.

 

I don't know how my institution handles things because we rarely see systems out of commission. Our custom built framework for managed Windows is pretty sweet though.

Dude, we just bought the pcs 1 year ago, right before semester started. I highly doubt it's old. The pc wasn't even broken for the fan, I just had set the fan to max speed.

So I assume you're talking about an experience that happened at work, on work computers, and dealing with an IT tech employed by your company.

 

In terms him wanting to "replace" the computer: Was this a case of he simply wanted to swap yours out, give you a different one, so that they can look into the issue back at the IT office? We do that all the time at my work.

 

If he straight up wanted to throw out/decommission the computer, then he needs to learn more.

 

Most recent Dell computers have an "intelligent" fan control mode (on by default) that basically just follows a temperature fan curve. We had an issue with 2 different computers at work where the Chassis Fan decided to go full 100% all the time. The Dell technicians were unable to troubleshoot the issue (Computers were under warranty, so we let Dell take a crack first generally).

 

Turns out, that Intelligent fan control got disabled somehow, so it just defaulted fan speeds to 100%.

 

In terms of F2 for BIOS, that is a very common BIOS key for other brands - perhaps he's a new hire?

 

Wait... what? F2 IS the default key for Dell BIOS...

 

F2 for BIOS, F12 for boot menu. Perhaps you meant boot menu? Some very old Dell computers might use Del instead of F2, but I have multiple generations worth of Dell PC's at work (From KabyLake going back to Core2Duo days) and they all use F2 for BIOS.

I just repeatedly press delete like my life depended on it to try to make sure I get into the bios.  ?
